became yearly visitors to the Paterno home in State Col- lege. He worked with Paterno and the football program and made scholarship donations to the middle linebackers. Kenton and his wife Audrey served on the Penn State Mont Alto Emeritus Advisory Board and both co-directed the Potomac Valley Penn State Club. Among other accomplishments, past gifts from the Broyles to Penn State created a scholarship at the Mont Alto, PA campus in honor of Kenton Broyles' parents. They also supported
the construction of The Bryce Jordan Center at University Park and most recently were one of two donors for the Lori and Russ Rose Women’s vol- leyball complex also at Uni- versity Park. Alongside their generosity, the Broyles were well known for their legendary collections of quality antiques and rare political memorabilia. With his lifelong fascination with American history, Kenton Broyles began collecting po- litical campaign memorabilia in its infancy over six de- cades ago to include posters, bandannas, canes, lanterns, snuff boxes, china pieces, and more. He amassed one of the greatest private collections ever assembled. He and his wife were avid members of the APIC (American Political Items Collectors) organiza- tion and donated unique items to local museums such as an early twentieth-century Klan white hood, robe, and cape, and a Women’s Suf- frage slogan cup both on dis- play at the National Museum of American History Smith- sonian. Other contributions were select pieces from his extensive collection of John Bell pottery that was do- nated to RenfrewMuseum in Waynesboro, PA which hous- es the largest Bell pottery col- lection in the Nation. Most of the examples pictured in Ted Hake’s iconic Encyclopedia of Political Buttons were from Kenton’s extensive collection. Among some of the more unique items for auction are two Roullet et Decamps automaton toys, 1860 Whig Party Bell/Everett campaign plush ferrotype, 1840 Har- rison Campaign tumblers and bunting quilt, Zachary Taylor flask, 1904 Parker/ Davis Campaign pin, 1908 G.O.P. Taft/ Sherman tip tray, President Taft portrait banners, Socialist & KKK collectibles, many unusual antique primitive pieces of furniture, and so much more.
