Prep school hockey teams like Rockland

Both of the pads at the Clarence-Rockland Arena were full morning, noon and night over the mid-January weekend. The Prep School Hockey Federation held one of its invitational tournaments in Rockland for the first time since the league started up and it may not be the last time. «The tournament has been awesome,» said Mark Hetherman, league president, during a Sunday phone interview prior to the start of the final games of the event. «This facility is great.» The biggest advantage of the Clarence- Rockland Arena for the PSHF is that the building houses two large regulation-sized pads for games along with complete dressing room facilities andmeeting areas, making it easier for tournament organizers to coordi- nate everything, as opposed to some other venues where they have had to deal with games taking place at one location while the registration and other activities at set up at another. The PSHF is a young Tier 1-level league, in its first year of actual game play, with members from several prepatory schools throughout Eastern Canada.The Clarence- Rockland tournament featured 12 teams, including two from the Ottawa Sharpshoo- ters, a new addition to the league, playing a round-robin series of games as part of their

league competition schedule. The PSHF refers to its tournaments as «Showcase» events because one of the goals of the league is to provide the members of its U16 and U18 teams with opportunities to get scouted for the upper tier and college- level teams. «It’s one of our prime goals,» saidHether- man. «When you put on a showcase like this, the scouts come out.This one has been
well-attended for scouts, and the hockey’s been fantastic, with a number of over-time games.» The PSHF schedule of Showcase tourna- ments began last September in Buffalo, NY, with a tournament arranged for eachmonth following inNewBrunswick in theMaritimes followed by Vermont and New Hampshire on the American Eastern Seaboard. This month’s Showcase in Rockland starts
the final round of the series with Lennoxville in Québec the locale for mid-February, lea- ding up to the PSHF North American Cham- pionships in Toronto at the end of February. Hetherman could not say for certain but he does not rule out the chance that Rockland may be the site for more of the league’s events in future. «It’s a great city for us to be in,» he said. «It’s central to where a lot of our teams are.»
