Health unit asks local councils for help

SNC Risk Management Plan “SNC is pleased to announce the signing of the first Risk Management Plan,” said Tessa Di lorio, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) Hydrogeologist and Risk Management official. As part of the Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Plan policies that took effect April 2015, SNC and Raisin Region Conservation Authority staff continues to deli- ver these policies on behalf of 18 municipa- lities. Implementation will continue through 2016 with extended Source Water Protection funding. Approximately 285 Risk Management Plans will be developed and implemented in vulnerable areas throughout the Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Region. Prior to signing the Risk Management Plan, property owners receive tips on how to conduct their activities in a safe manner to keep municipal drinking water safe. Under the Clean Water Act, 2006, the implementation of the Raisin- South Nation Source Protection Plan keeps contaminants out of municipal drinking water systems. The focus right now for the EOHU cam- paign is on restaurants, but Dr. Roumeliotis noted that other businesses and operations that provide food to the public will also come under the awareness campaign over time. He emphasized that the EOHUwants both, the public and business owners, and others to be aware of the regulations and tomake sure that proper public notice is given that a par- ticular establishment meets the standards. Business licensing is not under the juris- diction of the counties, but Dr. Roumeliotis explained that he is making presentations to both, the counties councils for Prescott- Russell and Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry, so that themembers of themember municipa- lities can let their own councils know why the EOHUwill ask themall for amendments to their business licensing bylaws. The amendment proposed is similar to one that the City of Cornwall has added to its business licensing bylaw, requiring anyone involved in the food industry to post, in a prominent public place, their food safe inspection certification. daycares and schools which provide snacks and meals for children, retirement homes, grocery stores, and other facilities.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, chief medical officer for the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) made a presentation during the January 13 committee of the whole session of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell. The EOHU wants local municipalities to amend the section of their business licen- sing bylaws which deals with restaurants and other food handlers. The requested amendment is all part of the regional agen- cy’s strategy for better public awareness and attention to provincial regulations dealing with food safety. «It (regulation) is already in place,» said Dr. Roumeliotis during his presentation and later during interviews with local media. Parmi ses nombreuses réalisations, notons qu’il est coprésident du Comité de l’inclusion de cours/activités obligatoires dans les écoles des Premières Nations ainsi qu’un comédien engagé de L’écho d’un peuple . Quant à M. Lalonde il a été animateur auprès de la Fédération de la jeunesse fran- co-ontarienne (FESFO) et est devenu cofon- dateur d’une compagnie de théâtre franco- ontarienne, LeThéâtre de Dehors . Très actif aussi pendant ses études universitaires, il est aujourd’hui animateur culturel. M. Lalonde poursuit son engagement et son bénévolat en tant que directeur auprès de multiples

the Health Protection and Promotion Act. The legislation covers a wide range of busi- nesses and also public institutions where food is served. Included are restaurants,

Water pipe warning With the sub-zero temperature throughout Eas- tern Ontario since the mid-January weekend, homeowners and local merchants are advised to make sure the water pipes inside their houses and businesses are well-insulated. If there is any doubt about the insulation or if there is concern that the outside supply line from either the municipal system or a private well may not be far enough below the frost line, leave one or two cold water taps open a bit to allow a trickle of water to continue to flow and so keep the water in the line moving and less likely to freeze up. For a two-storey building, leave one tap open on each floor.Also consider keeping a warm air heater in the room to keep pipes from freezing. L’enseignant à la retraiteMaurice Godard a toujours été engagé dans la communauté, soit au sein du Club Richelieu Embrun, du- quel il est membre depuis sa fondation en 1972, soit à la Maison des Arts, au conseil d’administration de la Coopérative agricole d’Embrun, qu’il a également présidé, ainsi qu’à la chambre de commerce. Il a aussi fait partie dumouvement pour l’adoption d’un règlement sur l’affichage bilingue dans la Municipalité de Russell. Gilles Fournier est directeur général pour le Groupe Action de Prescott et Russell de- puis 2012 et il est très engagé au sein de sa communauté. Il est, entre autres, conseiller scolaire au Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario, directeur du conseil d’administration du Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario ainsi que trésorier du Manoir de Vankleek Hill. Enseignant de français, puis directeur d’école à la retraite, Bruno Lecot a joué un rôle important dans la construction du Monument de la francophonie sur l’Île du Chenail à Hawkesbury.
