• Recycling shrink wrap in most markets — 151 million pounds of plastics were recycled globally in 2017; • Providing access to in-store plastic bag and film recycling bins for customers; and • Encouraging suppliers to include the How2Recy- cle label on pack—last year more than 800 Walmart private label suppliers participated. TheWalmart Foundation is also supporting a number of circular economy initiatives such as the U.S. Cham- ber of Commerce Foundation’s Beyond 34 project — a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at increasing the current 34 percent recycling rate in the U.S. by provid- ing a scalable model to increase and improve recycling and recovery rates in local communities. In being a signatory to the G7 Oceans Plastics Char- ter and the New Plastics Economy Global Commit- ment being led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with the UN Environment, Walmart is working globally to reduce plastic waste within its operations and throughout its value chain. By the end of 2017, Walmart diverted from landfills 81 percent of unsold products, packaging and other waste mate- rials in the United States.
On February 6-7, an inaugural Future of Flexo event was hosted at Clemson University’s Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics, presented by OMET Americas. The event centered around “New Year, New Technology” and was sponsored by indus- try print suppliers Eaglewood Technologies, Siegwerk, Phoseon Technology, Nazdar Ink Technologies, DuPont, Techkon, DBT Coatings and Harper Corpora- tion.The two-day event was created to showcase new and innovative opportunities for flexo printers/con- verters to consider for their 2019 budget spending and overall long-term cost savings.This first event in- cluded presentations on everything from the latest OMET press options, like the flexo/digital hybrid press created with Durst, to anilox cleaning tech- niques, digital flexo plate creation methods, UV LED coating and curing applications, and much more. “The Future of Flexo event by OMET was a great event to showcase, not only...products from industry suppliers, but also highlighted the amazing work going on at the Sonoco Institute,”said Peter Mulheran,Vice President and General Manager of EaglewoodTechnologies.
