Old Alleynian Association Football Club

Hon Secretary: Ben Precious (02-07) Email: preciousb1 @ hotmail.co.uk

As the Club came into existence only half way through 2013-14, there is relatively little to report from that season. A few friendlies and a brief cup foray did, however, provide evidence that the Club did indeed have a future and we looked forward to the following campaign with relish. A delightful English summer meant that we were able to turn down the inevitable stream of offers from various Dubai based facilities in order to stage weekly warm weather training sessions on the College’s hallowed turf, and a squad began to take shape. The 2014-15 season started in September and though everyone’s expectations were high I do not think anyone expected quite such a storming start: six wins from six meant that the team’s only worry was the lack of competition. Despite a mid-season stutter in form – perhaps the result of a rather over-extended winter break – OAAFC has qualified for the promotion playoffs to the prestigious Division 5 South championship. However this season finishes, it has been an outstanding first year for the Club and laid some excellent foundations for future development. Hopefully, in the year to come the Club will continue to achieve excellent on-field results, test itself at a higher level in Division 4 (promotion permitting), secure a permanent home ground and begin to explore the potential for the establishment of a second team. If anyone is interested in getting involved with the Club, whether that is just training once a week or looking to play matches, then please get in contact with either myself (preciousb1 @ hotmail.co.uk) or Nick Brown at the College (brownnc @ dulwich.org.uk).

The Arrow Trophy crew in action

Dinner at the Royal Corinthian was enjoyed in a warm glow of success and the usual good evening was had by all with the prospect of taking on Winchester, Charterhouse and Bradfield in match racing on Sunday. However, Sunday dawned bright, sunny and completely windless! As match racers we headed across towards Calshot and tied up to a buoy to await a puff of wind. None came and at 11:30 there was a meeting on the committee boat, with a decision that we would wait until 12:30 before abandoning racing. Unfortunately, a helpful suggestion that it might be possible to re-sail match racing at a later date merely resulted in a racing postponement signal. And so to Sailing Instructions and the extremes of British weather: loopholes in the Instructions lent no clarity as to whether the event might be rescheduled and also which trophies should be awarded. So it was not until after a month of seemingly endless correspondence, discussion and a committee vote that we were finally confirmed as Arrow Trophy winners and not merely fleet race winners. As ‘Dulwich College’ our sailing was of a high quality in a high quality fleet. To achieve three bullets out of three was outstanding. As a crew we were part of something special and it makes organising it so worthwhile. Our Commodore and Secretary would also no doubt confirm that we have come such a long way since we started out as a novice crew in 1995. It was a total Dulwich team effort. As always the crew’s thanks go to the Society’s members for their continued support both moral and financial, and also to those based on shore and on the water for the accommodation, hospitality and for staying out on the water to take many excellent photographs. Full results are on the Arrow Trophy website: www.arrowtrophy.org.uk. This year’s crew: Alastair Capon (73-80) (skipper); Anthony Frankford (62-69); Ollie Light (03-08); Anthony Lindley (92-00); Jemima Lofts (Head of Sailing); Charlie Lowe (94-01); Conrad Manning (09-11); Matt Pimm (guest); Jason Proctor (00-07); Mark Richmond (95-00); and Richard Sainsbury (63-72).

The Boat Club is succeeding in its aims of promoting the sport of rowing within the College, providing a base for alumni with any interest in the sport with a means of keeping in contact, and socialising. This has been seen in the high turnouts at all events, particularly from recent leavers, including the OABC Annual Dinner and the Alleyn Club’s Annual Dinner.
