Clubs & Societies

any team matches because those members who are still active players all get their chess through other club and county teams. There is, however, nothing to stop a group of newcomers, perhaps from amongst recent leavers, to get together and organise a team or competition. Any OA interested in joining should contact the Secretary, preferably by email with a subject line ‘OA Chess’. Associate membership is also available to wives and other close friends. We would welcome some new younger members to help revitalise our links with the College.

The Club is continually aiming to invest both in itself and the College Boat Club, the source of most of its membership. We are in the process of donating a selection of photographs of past College crews who have achieved success at a high level and would encourage anyone who has any such photographs to send them through to oldalleynianbc @ gmail.com. We have commissioned Club bow ties with the OABC emblem that can be obtained on request for £20 – ideal for social events.

Old Alleynian Cross Country Club The OA Cross Country team ventured forth for their annual fixture against the elements and other old boy teams in the 62nd edition of the Alumni Race, hosted by Thames Hare and Hounds on Wimbledon Common on Saturday 13 December 2014. A fair amount of rain in the days before the race led to considerable surface water on the start field and elsewhere on Wimbledon Common. On-the-day conditions were, however, bright enough for some to wear singlets. With the ‘going’ varying from ‘heavy’ in places to Secretary: Jerry Watson (71-78) Email: thewatsonsroundhay @ yahoo.com

Annual Dinner A great time was had by all 52 members and guests on Saturday 10 January at the Club’s Annual Dinner, held at the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall. Guests included Dr Joseph Spence, the Master, Ivor Warburton (57-65), President of the Alleyn Club, oarsmen from the Upper School and their coaches. Splendid food and wine were enjoyed, followed by a speech from the Chairman, Tom Saunders (01-06), that highlighted the mutually beneficial relationship the Club has with the College. The Master thanked the Club for providing a template for other alumni clubs associated with the College to follow by means of inclusivity and rate of growth. As tradition dictates, the evening was rounded off by a rendition of Pueri Alleynienses before tracks were made towards the West End. I wish to thank all who made the dinner another great OABC event and encourage anyone with any interest in the fine sport of rowing to come forward and attend one of our events. No experience necessary – just interest!
