College Development Report

Phase 2 of The Laboratory will equip the College with dedicated labs for teaching Lower School Science, as well as state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technology (ICT) suites and a 240 seat multi-use auditorium that will benefit the entire College community through lectures, exhibitions, concerts and theatrical performances. Given the cross- curricular and co-curricular role of the building, we hope that many throughout the College community will support this second phase of work. The 2019 Society The 2019 Society, launched in February 2013, now has more than 800 members drawn from across the College community, from pupils in DUCKS (the College’s kindergarten and infant school) to Dr George Rettie, who left the College in 1935. The Society recognises donors who make gifts of £2,019 or more (£201.90 for those aged 18-27; £20.19 for pupils) between now and the 400th anniversary year. Donors may choose to direct their gift to a particular project or allow the College to allocate it to the area of greatest need. Members receive special recognition in the annual Donors’ Report , a Society tie (or scarf) and will have their names recorded within the second phase of The Laboratory. We hope to have 2,019 members by the 400th anniversary. Legacy Giving and The Canon Carver Society Legacy gifts remain very important to the College and we are pleased that membership of the Canon Carver Society, which recognises those who pledge a gift to the College in their will, continues to grow. Members of the Society are recorded on page 39. Details of legacy giving can be found on the back cover of this magazine, online and from the Development Office – see below for contact details. In 2013-14 we received £220,000 from the estate of the family of Greg Noble (76-85). This was an unrestricted donation that the Governors chose to apply to The Laboratory, given the present priority of this project. During the course of 2014 we also received bequests from John Boulding and Muriel Gilbert, widow of Edgar Gilbert (27-32). In addition, we were notified of a legacy of $100,000 for the Bursary Appeal Fund from the estate of the late Dr Michael White (51-58). The Canon Carver Society has been promoting legacy giving since it was established in 2004 by Ian Hay Davison CBE (45-49). Given all that has been achieved over the past decade, Ian decided that the time was right to step down from his role as President, and we are very grateful for all he has done in support of the College over the years. Ian was succeeded by Sir Peter

algorithm, Peter has created a flowing pattern known as the ‘Dragon’s Tail’ that replicates the growth processes of plants. Depicted on cool, buff-coloured concrete panels on the east and south faces of the building, and warm, rich tones on the north and west faces, the design reflects the richness of the terracotta and concrete hues of the Barry Buildings.

The Laboratory’s design echoes that of the Barry Buildings

Phase 1 of The Laboratory includes 18 labs for Middle and Upper School pupils – six for each of the three Science disciplines – and a three-storey atrium that provides a space to showcase the work of pupils throughout the College. The atrium is also the new home of Shackleton’s James Caird lifeboat. These facilities will significantly enhance the learning environment for our talented scientists and provide much-needed additional exhibition space for our artists. Those visiting College on Founder’s Day (Saturday 27 June) will be able to see these new facilities first-hand and there will also be an opportunity to explore the building at the OA Reunion (Saturday 3 October). The support of Old Alleynians, parents, staff, pupils and other friends of the College has been essential to this building. Donations large and small have contributed to our success in securing £4m: in 2013-14, 21 donors made gifts of £10,000 or more, while those giving £500 or less collectively raised £110,000. This gives us great confidence as we proceed with plans for the second phase of construction.

Phase 2 of construction will deliver a multi-use auditorium that will benefit all pupils
