love. It is a love that knows how to give and take. In short, it is the kind of love that Jesus demonstrated when He was here on earth. As we read these verses, it is easy to think of Christ. He is the only one who ever perfectly lived them. Try substituting the word Christ for the word charity or love every time the latter occurs in the passage and see how perfectly it fits. In other words, if we want happy homes we must let Christ live in them. Memory Verse: “ Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure- and whether it be right” (Prov. 20 : 11 ). While the Lord Jesus Christ was upon the earth, there were several homes in which He was a frequent guest. Per haps the home which He visited most often was that of Mary and Martha and their brother, Lazarus. One day when the Saviour was visiting in this home, Mary sat at His feet to listen to Him talk about His Father in Heaven. Perhaps she had Him answer many of her questions about His plan for her life. As Maty was talking with her Lord, Martha was busy doing her house work and preparing a meal for the Lord Jesus. At last Martha became impatient and said to the Saviour: “ Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.” The Lord Jesus ans wered: “ Martha, Martha, thou art care ful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” The Lord Jesus was pleased that Mary wanted to hide His words within her heart, for He would not always be with them. The work of the home would always be there to do, but Mary had made the best of the Saviour’s visit with them. Homes are a part of God’s plan for His children. The only truly happy homes are those in which the Lord Jesus Christ is not just an infrequent guest, but one where He is the head of the home, the most important member of the family! Each member of each home has his or her part in making the home the place of love and happiness that God intended it to be. Work and wor ship and play all are important parts of each family life. Each member must equally share in all three, and in every other phase of home life. Even the small est child can help to make his or her home a happy place in which to live. God’s Word says, “ Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.” Perhaps your home is not a Christian home. Talking about the Lord Jesus to your unsaved loved ones is not enough. Only by doing well your part in - your home can you cause them to want to know your Sa viour too. This week’s lesson is taken from the practical section of the book of Romans. Chapters 1 through 11 are doctrinal in their character. The foundations of the Christian faith are laid. Chapters 12 through 16 show how the superstructure of the Christian life ought to be built. To put it in other words, the first sec tion of Romans provides the roots and the second section the fruits of the Christian. The passages chosen for our present lesson emphasize a few of the important characteristics that ought to be seen in the life of very believer. The Proper Attitude of Brethren in Christ Rom. 12:9-16 Believers are expected to manifest love toward one another. The sort of love spoken of in this section is “ brother- love.” Christians ought to love one an other because they are brethren. They possess the love of Christ and therefore are bound to express it one to another. The pagans looked upon early Christians and said, “ Behold, how these Christians love one another.” The outside world ought still to be so impressed. It ought to be love without hypocrisy (v. 9). It should be a love that hates sin in its every form and is “glued to that which is good.” (v. 9). It should be a love that is absolutely unselfish (v. 10). This is one of the sure evidences of the new birth (1 John 3:14). It is a love that is faithful and earnest in our re lationships with one another, realizing that this is a part of our service for the Lord (v. 11). There is no room for laziness in the service of Christ. The love of the Christian should give him real joy and patience and earnestness in prayer (v. 12). It should be generous (v. 13) and forgiving (v. 14). It should be capable of entering into the experi ences of others (v. 15). It should have the same concern for the welfare of others as for our own and should mani fest the grace of humility toward those less fortunate than we (v. 16). The Proper Attitude Toward Those Outside Rom. 12:17-21 The Christian ought to possess the grace of forbearance. He ought not to be vengefúl. His life ought to be attrac tive. The word honorable may literally be rendered beautiful. The beauty of Christ ought to express itself toward those who as yet know Him not (v. 17). The vir tue of peace ought to manifest itself toward those outside. If there is not peace, the fault should not be ours. Someone has said, “ It takes two to T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
