Objects: A celluloid doll, and the pieces of armor mentioned in Ephesians 6:13-17, cut from cardboard, and coveted with sil ver paper. Lesson: This young fellow is a soldier, but judging from his looks he is a very poor one. What is lacking in this soldier? “ He has nothing with which to protect himself, and nothing with which to fight the enemy.’ifS;! You are right. If we are to know h ow .a Christian soldier should be armed, we must turn to God’s Word. Ephesians 6 will tell us. The first piece of armor mentioned is the girdle of truth. ■We will put this silver girdle around the soldier’s waist. Every Christian soldier should have truth as a ,part of his armor. The next piece; o f armor mentioned is the breastplate o f righteousness, which is the righteousness’ Christ. Mr. Soldier looks more real with this silver breastplate on him. A soldier must have shoes. W e read: “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” (v. IS). Here are the soldier’s silver shoes. And next, we are told: “Above all, taking the shield of faith” (v. 16). This shining shield reminds us of faith, in God and His Word, which the true Christian soldier must possess. Lesson T ext: Acts 21:12, 13, 27-34; Rom. 9 :l-5. Golden T ext: “ Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Outline and Exposition I . P au l ’ s C ourage (Acts 21:12, 13) W hether P au l was led by the Holy Spirit to undertake the journey to Jerusalem is an undecided ques tion;'-for it appears according to "this-rec ord that the Spirit was warning him not to go (cf. 21:4). On the other hand, some time before this Paul had made a decision to journey to Jerusalem (cf. Acts 19:21; 20:16). In all probability had his move not been in accordance with God’s will, he would have been enlightened to other purposes. On his way to Jerusalem, Paul tarried many days at Caesarea (vs. 8, 10). While he was there, a prophet from Jerusalem arrived and warned him o.f the persecu tion awaiting him if he journeyed to that city. So moved were the disciples that they pleaded with him not to go ;(v. 12). Then it ,was that Paul uttered the memorable words, “I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name o f the Lord Jesus” (v. 13). Surely his heart was not filled with a false spirit of martyrdom, but with a heaven- born courage enabling him to face death calmly, rejoicing in his privilege to die for the Name if need arise. II. P au l ’ s D anger (Acts 21:27-34) Arriving at Jerusalem, Paul consulted •with the Christians there and was per suaded to take a vow of seven days dura tion in order that he might show reverence

Here is the helmet o f salvation. To be a real Christian soldier, one must be saved by faith in Christ’s death on the cross. The soldier would not be fully armed if he did not have a sword. Here is his shining sword. It is called “thé word of God” (v. 17). Many Christian soldiers fail in life because they do not take God’s sword, the Bible, with them into the battle of life. One other thing is mentioned, but this cannot be seen. What is it ? “Prayer.” Yes. Though a Christian soldier might have every equipment, he cannot win life’s battles if he does not pray. Let us remember the words o f Paul : ‘‘Take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (v. 13). for the law and give offense to no one. When the seven days were almost ful filled, certain Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, immediately stirred the peo ple to violence, laying hands on the apostle (v. 27). These Jews were probably from Ephesus where a great uproar took place on Paulis last visit (cf. Acts 19:23-41). Paul was charged with teaching against the people, the law, and the temple (v. 28), they little realizing that at that very time Paul showed his reverence for all three. He was charged with defiling the temple by bringing a Gentile into the inner court of the temple (v. 29). According to Jew ish law the inner court was reserved for Jews, and the outer court was open to the Gentiles. For a Gentile to enter that inner court made him liable to death. Having seen Trophimus in the city with Paul, these Jews “Supposed” that he had taken him into the inner court. Because of this supposition concerning Paul and Trophimus, Paul was seized and dragged out of the temple (v. 30). Thou sands of strangers were in the eity, for it was the time of Pentecost, and a mob spirit based on religious fanaticism took control, leading to lawlessness (v. 31). How very often supposition fires religious BLACKBOARD LESSON
