difficulty, the master key that opens every door. If you have the presence of Christ, you can never be alone. In His presence, sin will be different to us. When we walk with Christ as our unfailing Friend, it is terrible to fail Him; and the treachery is none the less because, at our repentance, He smiles forgiveness on us again . . . We are kept day by day; it is not our doing, but His. We need never fear as to our equipment and our future. You may not know where the Lord will send you, but you know He will not send you anywhere, or command you to do anything, and not be nigh. You need not trouble as to our sufficiency. He will steady your nerves, give you courage, grant you liberty, and be all you need.-—W. Y. F ullerton . NOVEMBER IS The Ammunition of Faith “I will pray with the spirit” (1 Cor. 14:15). John Trapp, a saint and servant of earlier years, has left us these words: “ Prayer is the gun that we shoot; fer vency is the fire that discharges it ; faith is the bullet that pierces ,the throne of grace.” This is good, indeed very good. How ever, it might impress some that “the throne of grace” is an enemy to be shot by the one praying. To avoid this, another conception of faith is suggested: faith, the rocket, passes over the enemy’s head, along a" live wire, the Holy Spirit, to the throne of grace. Straightway is generated power that overcomes obstacles, supplies needs, and defeats opposition.— S elected . Are you willing to be crucified? Are you willing to die? If you are not, you are iio good. You can do nothing until you are dead. “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” So said the Master. He was the soil-less seed in the garner o f heaven, and we are the seedless soil, poor fallen humanity; and He was willing to be sown in our flesh that He might bring forth the redeemed to peo* pie heaven. And we, following in His steps, must die unto sin, if we would be raised to newness of life and share the glory which He has promised. ■ H - T aylor S m it h . NOVEMBER 18 Guarding the Inner Life “Hast thou faith? have it to thyself be fore God” (Rom. 14:22). When no eye seeth you except the eye of God; when darkness covers you; when you are shut up from the observation of mortals-—even then be ye like Jesus Christ. Remember His ardent piety, His secret de votion—how, after laboriously preaching the whole day, He stole away in the fnid- night shades to cry for help from His God. Recollect how His entire life was con stantly sustained by fresh inspirations of the Holy Spirit, derived by prayer. Take care of your secret life: let it be such that you will not be ashamed to read at the last great day. — C harles H addon S purgeon . NOVEMBER 19 Walking in the Light “ But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with an other, and the blood o f Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John mb m . \ Increasing light means increasing self judgment; and things which were allowed in the twilight of the dawn, become abhor rent as the noontide light reveals their true character. You may gauge your growth in grace, and your increasing reception of the Holy Spirit, by the tenderness of your con science with respect to sins which you once permitted without remorse, and almost without remark. In proportion . as you comprehend the full beauty of Christ your Lord, you will find imperfections in your best moments, and discern blemishes in your holiest deeds.—F. B. M eyer . NOVEMBER 20 Ripened Glory “ But grow in grace, and in the knowl edge o f our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?’ (2 Pet. 3:18). An apple just formed from its blossom may be a perfectly good apple, but it is premature. Not until it has grown and is sun-kissed will it put on its red cheeks of ripened glory. So must we grow until, finally, .' . Made like to Thee: A body like Thine own to bear, A glory all Thine own to share, In heaven’s wondrous “overthere,” Eternally. Let this be our highest ambition in life pl-to have our beings transformed into the image o f our glorious Lord. We hear much of living as Christ lived; however, we need to remember that the only way tb live as our Lord, is to have our Lord live in us, that He may live out His life through us.—R. E. N eighbour . NOVEMBER 21 The Radiant Path of Fellowship "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Rom. 6 : 1 1 ) . Are you willing to ascend the altar, the place of death? Are you willing to make the cross your abode, the place where you will pass every hour of your life in fellow ship with the crucified Jesus? Or does it seem to you to be too hard to surrender yourself, your will, your life so utterly up to death, so as to bear about daily the dying o f the Lord Jesus? I pray you, do not think this is too hard for you. It is the only way to close fellowship with the blessed Jesus; and through Him a free en trance to the Eternal Father and His love. — A ndrew M urray .

One, praying for a speaker, Made this his ardent plea: “May we a mighty Master, And a little servant see.” ; We pray it for all workers, And for ourselves—the same; Let Jesus fill the picture, Make us the simple frame! Behind transcendent glory These humble channels hide; And as we tell the story, Christ will be magnified! Filled with the Holy Spirit— For this we tensely pray— That when hearts would see Jesus, - We may not block the way.
