TA LK ING IT OVER (continued) books.” Certainly you and I can say we cannot live well w ithout books. As a church lib rarian you should think in terms of the various age levels of your people and their inter ests. In addition, you should consider a variety of types of w ritings such as devotionals, biographies, missionary challenges, Bible studies, personal liv ing, and other categories. W hen you consider any age group, ask yourself, “W hat is available in various cate gories th a t m ight appeal to them?” Realize, too, th a t people not only read for themselves but for those w ith whom they are dealing. For example, a young parent may not only want literature for his own personal devel opment, but he m ay desire informa tion which w ill help him as a parent or a husband or as a Sunday School teacher. First, you must make reading at tractive by showing groups in your church w hat reading m aterial is avail able. Then whet their appetites by letting them in on a little of the con tents of the books. Tell them about it or read excerpts. If you contact several Sunday School classes each Sunday morning, you take only a moment of their time, and yet you w ill be able to go through an entire church in a month or so. Some librarians use a little cart on which to wheel their books around. They do this Sunday mornings and Sunday evenings. They also have book tables at m any of the church activities during the year. Various bulletin boards throughout the church p lan t are used to introduce or to h ighlight certain books. Some libraries introduce special books for special seasons. They also tie them in w ith a m ain activity of the church. For example, if the librarian knows th a t a particular month w ill be u ti lized to emphasize missions, she w ill begin to introduce mission books sev eral weeks in advance. In this way she captures the n a tu ra l interest of the people. M ay I suggest, too, th a t you contact the lib rarian of several large churches in your area and get th e ir advice. I am sure th a t w ith their m any sugges tions you w ill be high ly successful. M ay God use you in an unusual way to reach the minds of both the saved and unsaved who come to your serv ices.
