Facility Manager

Greeting Cumberland View Community. The last 3 months have flow by with the AFL premiership, Melbourne Cup, The first Ashes Test and the AFLW premiership all behind us. As we transition from Spring to Summer we have seen the reintroduction of the fortnightly BBQs and the Spring/Summer menu. As the weather gets warmer and you start to spend more time outside, please remember to use the sun cream that is available at most of the exits to the internal courtyards and in the reception area. It is also recommended that you stay well hydrated and that you wear a hat. Summer season is also the time when we catch up with family and friends, often in crowded public spaces. Please remember to keep up good hand hygiene, be careful not to consume food that has been left out at room temperature for more than a couple of hours. It is also a good time to consider whether you need a COVID Booster shot. Our team are currently offering all residents the opportunity to have a COVD booster. Our head chef Sumith has created a delicious Christmas menu which I am sure will be a big hit. From our family to you yours we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and fantastic Ney Year. Regards Joe

Community Happenings Spring

What a wonderful spring it’s been at Cumberland View! As the weather warmed and the gardens bloomed, we filled our days with music, laughter, delicious food and cherished moments with friends old and new. From milestone celebrations to exciting outings, live entertainment to special visitors, this season has been packed with joy and connection. Let’s take a look back at all the memorable experiences we’ve shared together over the past few months. Musical Moments and Live Entertainment Spring brought a wonderful array of musical performances to our home. We were treated to soothing harp recitals by Susan Graham , energetic performances from guitarist Alex Matthews, and delightful concerts featuring talented students from Wheelers Hill College and Caulfield Grammar. The entertainment continued with engaging performances from Doug D’Rose, The Golden Girls’ 60s celebration, Max the Magician, and our walking minstrel Baruch who charmed us all with music and song. Lorenzo’s concert and the beautiful voices of the Skylarkers and church choir helped bring the festive spirit alive as Christmas approached.

International Flavours and Special Celebrations Our international cuisine programme took us on a culinary journey around the world. September featured a vibrant Mexican celebration complete with traditional fare to mark Mexican Independence Day, whilst November brought traditional American Thanksgiving delights including hot dogs. The spring season was marked by significant celebrations including Father’s Day with Ricky “Elvis”, a spectacular 110th birthday milestone celebration attended by family, friends, the Mayor of Monash and Channel 7, Grandparents Day honouring our beloved Nans and Pops, a colourful Diwali festival with dancing and music, and spooky Halloween festivities.

Message from Clinical Care It is a pleasure to share updates from our clinical team in this quarterly newsletter. It is our privilege to care for and support every resident entrusted to us. Clinical Focus Falls Prevention and Pain Management This quarter, we are focusing on falls prevention and pain management, particularly for those who may not be able to verbalise their discomfort. Pain is common; yet often overlooked. Since many residents cannot clearly communicate their pain, it is essential for staff to remain vigilant and regularly assess any new or unusual behaviours that may indicate discomfort. Our staff are effectively using the PainChek app to assess residents’ pain. Identifying and addressing pain early can significantly improve a resident’s comfort and quality of life. Staff continue to receive training in recognising symptoms and providing appropriate treatment. Falls: We have reintroduced the autumn leaf symbol to identify residents at high risk of falls and to alert all staff to keep a closer eye on them. A few reminders to help residents stay safe when walking within the facility: • Use your walker if you have one, even for short trips. • Wear supportive footwear or non-slip socks to prevent slips and falls. • Ask staff for help when needed; whether it’s picking something up or reaching for an item. We encourage residents and families to speak with our nursing team if they have any concerns, and we will assist you. Allied Health Services Let us know if you would like to see the visiting optometrist, mobile dentist, or Hearing Australia, and we can organise this for you. Kind regards, The Clinical Care Team

Meet the Team

1. What do you enjoy most about working here? I really love the connection that I make with the residents. As I get to know each person better, I enjoy learning about their passions and helping them experience more through music and conversation. At the end of each day of work my heart is lighter knowing I’ve made a difference. 2. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I love practicing Tai Chi with my master who trains me to improve my practice and teaches me not only about the movement but also the philosophy. To me this is a way of life with purpose. The way I approach work, family and life is based on this balance. I also love to go camping with my family and friends and exploring Victoria’s beautiful outdoors. 3. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? I have always been curious about the world and have already travelled to so many places, I have grown from these experiences. Now I feel I would like to make an even deeper connection with people, culture, and history. I have lived in Melbourne for 7 years and find it is a very multicultural city and there is still so much to learn so for now I am happy exploring my own city.

Meet the Resident

Margaret H

Meet our new friend Margaret. Margaret recently joined us at Cumberland View Aged Care. We asked her to share a little about herself. As a child Margaret recalls, with joy, jumping in the back of the car with her father and going rabbiting. This and the many hours she played “Shop” with her best friend Phyllis, where they used Mum’s empty kitchen products and made their own money. Margaret shares the biggest influence in her life has been her

faith and her connection to the Baptist Church community. As for changes in her lifetime – technology is the biggest. It poses many good and some not so good influences especially bullying on younger children. Margaret is assured her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren are fine because they have been raised and guided with kindness by very good people – her children. Kindness, to Margaret, is the most important quality to have and everyone is important no matter who they are - everyone counts. Margaret is very sporty, and her love of the Hawthorn AFL football club is only one aspect of this. Netball has been a huge part of Margaret’s life. When she started the Baptist church Chadstone netball club over 50 years ago Margaret saw a way to inspire young girls to be active, be part of their community and to be part of team. This helped to empower them to achieve their best potential. When she wasn’t running the netball club, coaching the team, or umpiring the games Margaret would volunteer with the Helping Hand association. Margaret is a much-loved member of her community and is sure to share her sunny smile here at Cumberland View too. Since coming to Cumberland View Margaret enjoys the book club, has attended all our music concerts, and shared she is planning on attending our daily exercise class. Please join us in welcoming Margaret our newest Cumberland View friend.

As the weather warms up and we enjoy more time outdoors, it is important to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Sunscreen is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin damage. Sunscreen dispensers have been fitted within areas of the home for everyone to access, the teams are also here to help apply sunscreen before outdoor activities. Please also remember to pair sunscreen with a wide-brimmed hat , sunglasses , light clothing for extra protection and seek some shade . During the warmer weather please also remember to remain hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

Spring Highlights

September 2025

September brought an array of fantastic entertainment, including performances by the theatrical group The Skylarkers, the always lively Tom Diaco, the charm of an Elvis impersonator, and the talented Alex Matthews, just to name a few. Our hearts were warmed by visits from Milo, our beloved pet therapy poodle, who never fails to bring smiles and cuddles. We celebrated our dads at a special Father’s Day morning tea, enjoyed our AFL Footy Tipping presentation, welcomed new residents over afternoon tea, and honoured our September birthdays. Residents also enjoyed our monthly Scenic Bus Drive and Seated Tai Chi with Chris.

To finish the month, we embraced Halloween with fun costumes and themed activities.
