EZEKIEL: THE MAN AND HIS MESSAGE ' By H. L. Ellison

There is certainly a place for a re served and conscientious effort to ex pound the mysterious message of the enigmatic prophet Ezekiel. Some highly technical works on his proph ecy have appeared recently, but not much for the average Bible student. The writer of the present work warns us that we shall be disappointed if we “ r e g a r d th e p r o p h e t s mainly as guides to the future.” The influences that most strongly molded his think ing are the International Critical Commentary on this prophet, the volume in the Cambridge Bible series, and the German eschatologist, Paul Althaus. One turns with these explanations to the key chapters of Ezekiel (37-39) to see what the author makes of them and finds to one’s surprise that he is willing to accept the obvious impli cation that Israel as a nation has a future restoration that will be of miraculous nature, but he is not at all ready to go along with those who would make the church the heir of these prophecies. He will argue with some of the interpretations of the Sco field Bible and G. H. Lang, for in stance, but he does believe in a mil lennium and in a final rebellion at the end of it. He cannot, however, see a literal fulfilment of some of the latter chapters; such as a millennial temple with sacrifices. The book is stimulating and gra ciously written and will help all stu dents of the book to restudy some of its problems. 144 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., Grand Rapids; $2.50. Moorehead’s Outlines have been among the hard to get out-of-print books for many years. This Old Testa ment volume was first printed in 1839. It contains introductory chap ters on Bible study and on the types. It then takes up the major divisions of each book with a paragraph or two of exposition of the section. It is the bird’s-eye type of coverage, of course, but this always provides the proper basis for dropping down into the de tails of analysis and exposition of the chapters and verses. Moorehead was for years on the faculty of Xenia Theological Seminary in Ohio. 363 pages; cloth: Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $3.95. All recommended books may be obtained by mail from the Biola Book Room, Mail Order Dept., 560 So. Hope St., Los Angeles 17, Calif. OUTLINE STUDIES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT By W G. Moorehead
