‘Beauty’ is more of a state of mind; it is really more about confidence. If you are confident enough to be the person you are with no fear, that is real ‘beauty.’” “
MG: Tell us about your experience as President of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Moss: “The Marist College chapter of NSBE is young, we just were chartered in the fall of 2020. So, we haven’t had a lot of time to get to everything that we want to do yet, but virtually we are keeping busy. In our short time here, we had a great collaborative event between counseling services and the Asian American Alliance. In this event, wehadagroupdiscussionabout theproblems facing both of our communities. It was amazing to focus on STEM-related mental health conversations, and have a free space to communicate how we were all feeling. NSBE has lots of plans in the works, but one that I am most excited for is our community outreach events. We want to meet with local high school students and talk about STEM. In high school, I won an NSBE scholarship from my local South Carolina organization. Coming here, I wanted to keep that relationship with NSBE and strengthen my bond with the community. Now, as the NSBE president, I am so happy I can give back to an organization that has supported me.”
MG: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen? Moss: “I would tell incoming freshmen to not let the title of ‘freshman’ deter them. I was a freshman once too, and in those early stages, I really wanted an internship. Typically in the STEM field, internships are reserved for upperclassmen, but I knew I was qualified enough to get one. Usually, I would be the only freshman at networking events, but that determination paid off. It takes initiative and lack of fear to break through barriers.” MG: Where do you see yourself in the future? Moss: “I would love to be in software design, but I would also love to be on the runway, because why not do both? I look great on a catwalk and behind a computer screen. The dream is to be employed as a software developer, break into high-fashion modeling and just be happy.” •
