HAWKESBURY | You can’t expand an insti- tution without felling some trees. But, the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital is taking a pro-tree approach to its expansion, according to its architects. “The hospital has taken a very progressive view on its redevelopment plans and had made it clear to the design team that the existing trees are to be main- tained where possible,” Gord Erskine, of Er- skine Dredge & Associates Architects Inc., writes in a report to town council. “All trees on the site over 150 mm. in diameter have been surveyed by size and located on the site plan survey. The entire design team is supportive of this mandate and efforts have been made to ensure only those trees that must be removed for the hospital expan- sion will be affected. Clearly all trees will be lost under the building and parking lot ex- pansion footprints.” The preservation of trees was one of the concerns expressed by residents at a recent meeting on the construction project. “Some trees whose drip lines fall well within the footprint of the building or parking/road surface will also be removed (trees too close to these elements are un- likely to survive once their roots have been either cut or covered with impermeable surfaces). Fortunately, the site is relatively flat and there will be limited disturbance of the existing canopy due to grading issues near the new buildings and site elements,” Erskine says. Specifications will call for tree protection during construction. As required by the provincial environ- mental act, a survey of Butternut trees has been completed. There are seven Butternut trees identified on the site, two of which are in very poor condition and are deemed non-retainable. None is impacted by the construction. The erection of the $160 million addition is scheduled to take place between 2014 and 2017.
