In eastern Ontario, August 27 is back to school day for the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (CEPEO) and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est onta- rien (CSDCEO). For schools administered by the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and Upper Canada District School Board, the year runs from September 3 to June 27.

It is hard to believe, but a new school year is just around the corner. For English-language schools in Argen- teuil, classes resume during the last week of August. Schools administered by the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board re-open Au- gust 30. The last day of school is June 20. An exception is Arundel Elementary School, where classes take place from August 29 to June 23. August 29 is also the first day of

Essential supplies continue to be provid- ed fee-free to students attending Upper Canada District School Board schools. Under a policy adopted in 2012, stu- dents do not pay for essential learning materials, supplies, activities and text- books. The policy does not apply to ma- terials for enhanced programs or optional programs and activities. “The board passed the policy last year because we believe that all our students – whatever their economic circumstances – have the right to attend school with- out their families having to worry about paying for materials essential to their learning,” said Director David K. Thomas. “Returning to school is a cause for celebra- tion. It should not be a financial burden on any family.” Materials used to supplement a student’s educational experience and that are not required under the core cur- riculum – such as expenses for yearbooks, graduation gowns, optional field trips not curricular in nature, school dances, and student recognition programs – may be subject to fees. Additional fees may be charged to a student if a school community wishes to offer programming and materials“beyond what is necessary to meet the learning ex- pectations of a particular grade or course.” For instance, if a student is building a bench in woodworking class, and wants to use a specialized wood not supplied in the course, the student may be charged for it. However, for those students who wish to build the same bench as part of the cur- riculum expectations, the board must pro- vide necessary materials to ensure they can complete the project. Bus reminder Area Ontario Provincial Police detach- ments remind everyone that some school buses will be back in service early next week. The public is reminded that every- one driving on a highway while meeting a stopped school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing. Many children walk to school; motorists should also be aware of the increased pedestrian traffic as children make their way for their first exciting day.
