PRÉVERT’S “LA MIETTE” A few years before Chagall’s ar- rival, Saint-Paul-de-Vence welcomed Jacques Prévert, a poet and screen- writer, and a man whose words be- came synonymous with French ro- manticism. Prévert didn’t move to the village in search of isolation – he came for the camaraderie, free- dom and inspiration that he shared with artists across the French Rivi- era. He turned his stone cottage “La Miette”, into a base for people to gather at the heart of the old town.

ary inn and guesthouse Colomb d’Or. It all began in the 1920s as a small café-bar called Chez Robin- son, where charismatic owner Paul Roux offered homecooked meals to poor artists fleeing Paris to head south. Since they had no money, Roux allowed these artists to pay for their room and board with their works. This led to the creation of one of the world’s most fascinating private art col- lections. Today, while you dine on the ter- race under the treetops, original canvases by Picasso, Miro and Braque hang quite casually on the walls around you, without protective glass covers, while a huge kinet- ic sculpture by Alexander Calder stands next to the pool. This is a place where the history of the 20 th century is tangible and can be breathed in through the aromas of homemade Provençal cuisine.

Prévert was a regular guest of the leg- endary Inn Colomb d’Or (Golden Dove), where artists (including Picasso and Ma- tisse) would often pay for their meals and lodging with their own paintings. It was at the tables of this inn, sipping a glass of local wine, that Prévert wrote and edited parts of his famous collection of poetry Paroles (Words). It was also in Saint-Paul that he penned the screen- play for the cult film Children of Para- dise, which is today considered a mas- terpiece of world cinema.

He adored the local rhythm of life and often wrote poems dedicated to the place itself and its people, such as “Place du châ- teaux” (Castle Square), inspired by every- day scenes and bocce ball played in the vil- lage square. Prévert’s spirit lives on today in every alleyway of the village, testifying to a time when poetry walked its streets. ICONIC SPOT If you’re seeking out the artistic heart of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, you’ll find it at the very entrance to the village, in the legend-
