M eet Jen and Selasi Berdie from Sprout Organic, the first Australian company to make plant-based infant formula and kids’ snacks. “My wife Jen and I became plant-based eight years ago; it was natural and easy to do, with many food options available. We experienced the health benefits instantly and felt it was the right thing to do for the planet. However, what we did not realise was how limited plant-based food options were for infants and children. When Ellis, our first child, was born, Jen suffered from mastitis. As much as she loved breastfeeding and tried to treat the infection she was also experiencing a lot of pain, so we began exploring formulas to help supplement”. Search for a solution “So, as plant-based parents who care deeply about providing the best possible nutrition for our children, we decided to search for a nutritious plant-based formula instead. What we thought would be a short trip to a supermarket turned into multiple trips to health food stores and pharmacies, and eventually investigating every product we could find online, only to discover that there were actually no organic plant-based formula options available – and not just in Australia, but across the globe. This got us thinking about how many other parents were experiencing this problem, and whether we could create a solution. Three years later, we welcomed to the world our second son, Kingston – along with the launch of Sprout Organic, which we believe to be our life mission: to create nourishing, wholesome, plant- based nutrition for happy, healthy kids”.

Q: Will my baby or child miss out on any nutrients? A: “ No. Australia has the strictest standards in the world for manufacturing infant formula. This means that for our product to even make it to the shelves, we undertake countless testing and safety protocols to ensure that our formula is a nutritionally complete food source for infants. Legally, all infant formulas sold in Australia must meet the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand requirements to contain all the key macro and micro nutrients required for healthy growth and development of an infant. In addition, we move all of our products through a critical review process by a panel of paediatricians, doctors, nutritionists and midwives, plus real mums and families. We are also an active member of the Australian Infant Nutrition Council, which requires strict safety eligibility criteria for our products”.
