1929 TarbeU’s Teachers’ Guide B y M artha T arbell , P h . D.

Biederwolf’s Illustrations (Mythology) B y D r . W . E . B iederwolf D. L. Moody said that illustrations in a sermon are “windows to let the light in.” Ministers and Christian teachers are always glad for the appearance of a collection of new illustrations, especially when they are out of the ordinary. Dr. Biederwolf has endeavored to furnish some sermon windows of an unusual nature. His volume of 100 illustrations is not a compilation, for he has gone to the trouble of examining original sources of classic mythology and forming his own lessons on .the stories. In this sense we have in this book new and very useful material. The author speaks of the en joyment he has had in living for a time in the rare atmosphere of the great classic past, and we believe many will share his blessing through this book. The book will be of value to those who are not ministers or teachers, for it really furnishes 100 short stories with very prac tical lessons drawn from them. Glad Tidings Publishing Company.—B. —o— Her Master P h ilip J erome C leveland There seems to be a mania just now for writing stories—fiction, romance—using parts of the Bible as the basis. This par ticular book deals with the days of Jesus’ sojourn on earth just previous to the crucifixion, We feel there is a danger in such books, interesting though they may be. A lady came into our home whose Bible knowledge consisted only of what she had heard in Sunday school, which was irregularly attended. She had noth ing straight in her mind. She began to pick up a book here and there as we left them around. As she read she would come across a Bible story told in this imaginative way. Then in another book she would find the same incident with the names of the characters and much of the detail, different. She was more confused than ever. Such books in the hands of those not thoroughly familiar with the Bible, cause erroneous and conflicting impressions. This book is published by Plainville Press. Costs $2.00. Has ISO pages. —O. G. B. — o — The Reformers and Holy Scripture An Historical Investigation B y R ev . S ydney C arter , L itt . D. Dr. C. Sydney Carter, Principal of the Bible Churchmen’s Missionary College, Clifton, Bristol, in this little book of seventy-six pages has brought together a number of statements by the different reformers regarding the inspiration, authority, supremacy and sufficiency, as well as the interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. The work is well done and puts at our disposal in very convenient form the position of the reformers regarding the Scriptures. We are sure that an intelli gent and careful reading of this little book would be very enlightening and helpful to the rank and file of Christians in our day. Published by Chas. J. Thynne & Jarvis, Ltd. London—Price 2/6. U. S. $f.25. —J. M. M.

In studying the International S. S. Lessons for 1929, teachers will find it difficult to get one book covering the great and varied themes chosen by the Com mittee. Yet that difficulty has been over come in Tarbell’s Teachers’ Guide. Teachers will find in it a wealth of material gathered from reliable sources, which will enable them to present the lesson in a constructive and illuminative form. For the benefit of those not familiar with this Guide, the lesson is treated un der the following headings: 1. Expla nations and Comments (this division outlines the lesson). 2. Light from Oriental Life. 3. The Historical and Geographical Background. 4. A Sugges tion to Teachers. 5. Graded Presentation of the Lesson. 1. Young People and Adults. 2. Intermediates and Seniors. “The Guide” shows careful study and wide, ' patient research. Your attention is called to the fact that Dr. Martha Tarbell is in no way related to Dr. Ida Tarbell. Published by Fleming Revell. Price $1.90. Post Pd. $2.00.—E. N. The Sunday School Times, Philadel phia, reports that through the gift of a devout Christian woman who recently visited the Holy Land, a piece of land has been purchased on the Mount of Olives, facing Jerusalem, and has been donated to the well-known Travel Institute of Bible Research. This is said to be the first piece of land to be owned on the Mount of Olives proper by a Protestant Church Organization. It borders the tra ditional site of Christ’s weeping over Jerusalem and is but a few minutes’ walk east of the Brook Kidron, and above the Garden of Gethsemane. On this land there will be erected as soon as sufficient funds are available, an undenominational Protestant Bible Study Center, for teachers, pastors, and Church workers of all protestant denominations and all nationalities. Until such time as this center is erect ed, the land will be -turned into a beauti ful garden with numerous retreats for prayer and meditation. Bibles in all lan guages and hymn-books can be secured from the caretaker. It is also planned to repair and reconstruct the old path up the mountain-side, which our Lord m o s t probably used, on the triumphal entry and on numerous other occasions. This path is the only means of access to the land. “The Father’s House” “Words cannot describe how beautiful this message is to me,” writes an overseas friend about this late message of James H. McConkey. It will be sent absolutely free to anyone interested enough to write the publishers for it. Address SILVER PUBLISHING SOCIETY Dept. M Bessemer Bldg., Pittsburgh, Pa.
