THE MONTH THAT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD!

With National Men Make Dinner Day falling on the first Thursday of November

a couple times a week to share a meal. We put our phones away, get rid of all other distractions, and just enjoy one another’s company. What we’ve realized as the years have gone by is that quality matters so much more than quantity, and our weekly dinners are the perfect occasions to have that quality time together. So, if you’re a parent with younger kids and are worried about the number of times you can sit down at the table together, I encourage you to aim for a few, good, distraction-free dinners rather than feeling bad about not sitting down together every night. This month, we’ll have the opportunity to extend that quality time with the rest of our family when we get together for Thanksgiving. While we typically do a potluck type of holiday get-together, I have to admit that I’m one of the few people who enjoys making a full Thanksgiving meal, including the turkey and all the delicious side dishes. I understand why a lot of people might complain about the process, but I honestly find it relaxing. I can’t wait to celebrate this year!

When our boys were younger, my parents lived with us, and, since I was busy at work during the day, they would take on the responsibility of cooking. While I appreciated their efforts, being spoiled with all their delicious meals got me into the habit of only cooking dinner on the weekends. I’d start by looking in the fridge to see what we had, and then I’d come up with a meal we could enjoy around the table together. I do have some Persian recipes I return to often, which usually include tasty dishes consisting of rice, lima beans or lentils, and dill, or my favorite stew I made with eggplant. But for the most part, my modus operandi for cooking is really just based on what is available. It might be all

My husband and I typically share the responsibility of cooking dinner, but one thing that is wonderful about our routine (especially in regard to National Men Make Dinner Day) is that my husband packs me lunch to take to work every day. In that

way, neither of us have set expectations of what we will eat. Instead, we are just appreciative of the work someone puts into creating a nice meal. While we do eat separately from my kids now that they are older, we still make sure to get together

To you and your family, Happy Thanksgiving!

3 Ways Orthodontic Treatment Improves Your Overall Health IT’S RARELY ‘JUST COSMETIC’

While Invisalign has become one of the most popular orthodontic treatments among patients in recent years (with over 6 million people seeking out its associated benefits), a great number of people still opt out of using Invisalign or any other helpful treatment because they believe that orthodontic care is purely cosmetic. But in most cases, this notion couldn’t be further from the truth. When a patient is recommended orthodontic care, rarely is it “only cosmetic.” But since it does get an amazing cosmetic result, people often forget about the important health- based reasons to straighten your teeth. Here are a few of those reasons. Preventing Sleep Apnea For many people, obstructive sleep apnea is the end of a long process beginning before birth. But as it turns out, taking steps

to straighten your teeth helps relieve some of the associated symptoms. When you choose to get braces, you’re improving your bite and jaw. This ensures you have a healthy airway, which leads to less obstruction, irritation, and snoring. Stopping Bone Erosion The placement of your teeth affects how much pressure is placed on your jaw bone while you’re participating in activities like speaking and eating. But, when you have misaligned teeth, too much pressure is placed on certain areas, which slowly erodes the bone. It also means there isn’t enough pressure on other areas, leading to a lack of stimulation. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can move your teeth back into the right place, so you have the right amount of pressure for a healthy jaw bone.

Reducing Disease and Decay If your teeth are misaligned or crowded too closely together, you’ll have a harder time cleaning out food or debris that can become stuck. Over time, that debris turns into plaque, which is what causes cavities. Furthermore, if you have a difficult time cleaning between your teeth, you face a higher risk of gum disease. While orthodontic treatment can give you the confidence to smile bright, several other benefits come from taking steps to straighten your teeth. If you want more information, we suggest picking up a copy of Dr. Alborzi’s book “A Healthy, Happy Smile: Eight Reasons to Straighten Your Teeth.” It’s a great resource to get started on your journey to a beautiful and healthy smile!

OUT OF THE WAY, METAL BRACES!

Our Alternative Treatment Damon braces are smaller and smoother than conventional braces, and they reduce the need for painful expanders. Made of high-grade surgical stainless steel, Damon metal braces straighten your teeth comfortably and gently. There are a number of other benefits as well: • Our patients experience a 37–40% shorter treatment time on average, which can mean getting your braces off 6–9 months sooner than your friends. • Damon braces allow freedom of movement, resulting in faster results with gentler forces. • Increased precision and effectiveness reduce the need for many of the time-consuming and complicated procedures used with traditional braces. • They also require fewer adjustments, and, as a result, your orthodontic appointments will be faster and fewer in number.

If you’re a parent who had braces when you were growing up, you might have a less-than-favorable recollection of headgear, tooth extractions, bulky appliances, and painful expanders. With these memories in mind, an orthodontist telling you your child needs braces might leave you feeling worried on their behalf. But, with the advent of innovative orthodontic inventions, your child’s experience will be completely different than yours was 20 years ago! Here at Alborzi Orthodontics, we work hard to stay on the cutting edge of novel but effective orthodontic treatment options. With Dr. Alborzi’s experience using Damon braces, gone are the days of painful headgear and palate expanders. What Is a Palate Expander? This device is designed to create more space for teeth to grow. It is anchored to the back molar teeth by metal rings (which require spacers or separators to make room between the teeth so the metal band will fit) and sits on the roof of your child’s mouth. Parents are asked to turn a key that fits in a screw attached to the palate expander. Every time you turn the screw, it widens the palate, by separating the palatal bones, in an attempt to make room for teeth to fit. If this description sounds painful, that’s because IT IS! It also comes with a whirlwind of other unpleasant side effects, such as headaches, difficulty speaking, extra saliva, a gap between the front teeth, and food debris getting lodged between the expander and the roof of the mouth.

Stay in a Real Castle PAGE 4

CARCASSONNE

Every year, tourists flock to Disney’s “Magic Kingdom” and marvel at Cinderella’s iconic castle. As fun as it is to see this Florida-based attraction, it would be even more magical to step back in time and visit a real medieval citadel. What if you could walk the same ramparts as Roman legionnaires and climb the same towers as French kings? If this idea gives you goosebumps, pack your bags for Carcassonne, France. A four-hour train ride from Paris, towering above the rolling vineyards of southern France, you’ll find one of the most intact, accessible castles in Europe. With sweeping, concentric walls and 53 elegant towers, the Cité de Carcassonne is a breathtaking sight. Once an impenetrable border fortress between the kingdoms of France and Aragon, the gates now stand open to anyone curious enough to walk its cobblestone streets.

In fact, you can stay in the ancient city yourself. The five-star Hotel de la Cité Carcassonne occupies a former bishop’s palace and overlooks the inner ramparts of the fortress. With medieval tapestries and gorgeous woodwork in the hotel’s interior, you’ll feel like you’re living among French royalty. Of course, if you’d prefer lodging with the commoners, plenty of quaint bed-and- breakfasts exist just across the Aude river. With rustic cafes, fresh crepes, and bustling crowds making their way down the twisting cobblestone streets, the surface-level experience of Carcassonne would be enticing to anyone wanting to explore the French countryside. But for those who want to delve into the history of this storied castle, grand narratives await you.

Just walking the walls of Carcassonne paints a picture of the past. While the outer fortifications were built by Louis IX and Phillip III, a section of the inner wall is far older. The red brick used in this part of the construction dates back to before the existence of France itself. Roman troops first fortified the hillside town around 100 BCE, giving every stone of this site a story to tell. If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing medieval life for yourself, your adventure awaits in Carcassonne.
