New Ontario smoking regulations in effect
Long-Term Care, smoking is the leading cause of death and disease inOntario, killing 13,000 each year. The province is imple- menting a strategy, which includes public education as well as legislation and policies to help smokers quit, protect non-smokers from second hand smoke, and educate and encourage youth to never start smoking. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act bans smoking in enclosed public places, workplaces, and in vehicles when children under the age of 16 are present in the vehicle. The act also prohibits the display of tobacco products prior to purchase by retailers and prohibits youth-targeted tobacco products such as
flavoured cigarillos.

It is also illegal to smoke on sport surfaces, in spectator areas around sport fields and 20metres surrounding these locations.The ban includes playgrounds at hotels, motels and inns. The sale of tobacco products on the campuses of postsecondary educational institutions, such as colleges and universi- ties, has also been banned. The new policies apply to buildings and areas that are owned or leased by postse- condary educational institutions or student unions and that are used for students’ edu- cational programs, recreational activities or residential services.

Bigger ban less smokers Since implementing bans on smoking and tobacco sales, Ontario has seen a decrease in smoking from24.5 percent in 2000 to 18.1 per cent in 2013. Lancement du programme Moi j’écrase Dipika Damerla, ministre associée des Soins de longue durée et de la Promotion du mieux-être, s’est jointe à huit partenaires du domaine de la santé de l’est de l’Ontario, le 21 janvier dernier à l’hôtel de ville d’Ottawa, afin de lancer le programme Moi j’écrase. Celui-ci est un programme innovateur destiné aux fumeurs habitant l’est de l’Ontario et souhaitant arrêter de fumer ou diminuer leur consommation de tabac. Moi j’écrase est un partenariat entre l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa, le Pro- gramme régional de cancérologie de Champlain, Santé publique Ottawa, le Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario, le Bureau de santé du comté et du district de Renfrew, le Bureau de santé du district de Leeds, Grenville et Lanark, Téléassistance pour fumeurs et le Mackay Manor, un centre de réadaptation résidentiel pour toxicomanes, situé à Renfrew.
