received a brief featuring several issues of concern for the counties and listened as each mayor outlined one specific concern for his own municipality. UCRPWarden René Berthiaume described the session as “a very good meeting” for the mayors. “It was mostly around economic develop- ment issues we have around the counties,” he said. Issues raised during the session with the minister included the lack of provincial grant support funding for the Ottawa River Festival, the need for Ontario Hydro to pro- vide more electrical power to the Calypso Park recreation water park, and the ongo- ing problem with the provincial govern- ment’s farm tax remuneration system for rural municipalities.

The minister came here to listen. Ontario’s newMunicipal Affairs and Hous- ing Minister Linda Jeffrey made a whirlwind tour last week through the Glengarry- Prescott-Russell riding of Liberal MPP Grant Crack. She visited at two seniors retirement homes in Cumberland and Embrun May 23 before a late-afternoon meeting in St- Isidore with mayors from all across the Unit- ed Counties of Prescott-Russell. “It’s mostly a listening exercise,” said Jef- frey, regarding her main purpose for the rid- ing tour.
