Things have certainly slowed down a bit on the island. Many residents have departed for parts North. And you can now find a parking spot at the Publix on N. Collier Avenue! The same is true for our Club. The number of people attending events is lower than during season, and you can feel the more relaxed atmosphere around the Club. That is not to say there hasn't been a lot happening, however! It seems to some of us that we have spent much of this spring responding

to mechanical issues at the Club. The problems certainly reflect the age and level of maintenance provided over the past twenty years. But like many challenges, the problems seem to visit us when we least need them. Probably most notable is the passenger elevator. The electrical components of the elevator failed earlier this spring, and we have had to rely on the freight elevator to get some members upstairs and down. While this does give those members a different perspective of the Club, we do need to repair the passenger elevator. After soliciting quotes from three companies, we have signed a contract to refurbish the elevator and related systems. The project will take place in September. Thank you to Geoff Walker for his active leadership in this project. Geoff has also had the opportunity to get more familiar with our waste handling systems. One of the valves that handles the movement of wastewater from the property to the sanitary sewer system failed a couple of months ago. Geoff, in conjunction with various contractors and engineering firms, was able to get the pumps working. As I told Geoff..."it was a dirty job, but someone had to do it!". Thank you, again, Geoff! We have also been soliciting input from the staff and a random selection of members for our planned building refurbishment. That input has been passed to our architect and interior design contractors. We are working toward a planned communication to the membership later this summer or early fall that will help visualize the changes and determine the cost. We will review the project in the November membership meeting. And throughout the summer, we are continuing to provide a great dining and club experience for those members and guests who will be here this summer. If you are in the area during the summer, don't forget to check the MIYC website for special dining offerings. And if you depart the area for the summer but return for a quick visit from time to time, don't forget to stop by. We always enjoy hearing what our members are up to! Finally, as the 'season' winds down, I would be remiss if I didn't say "Thank You" to all our members...those that have been with us for several years as well as those that have joined our club more recently. Our club is a friendly, welcoming group that makes being a member enjoyable and satisfying. It is so only because of the camaraderie and friendliness of our members. Enjoy the summer!
