prominent as I well could. One day, as I went into meeting, one o f the lawyers, with whom I had formed some acquaintance, and who had been in a deep anxiety of mind, I found waiting at the door o f the church. As I went in he took from his pocket a paper and handed it to me, remarking, ‘I deliver this.to you as the servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.’ I put it into my pocket until after meeting. On examining it I found it to be a quit claim deed, made out in regular order, executed ready for deliv ery, in which he quitclaimed to the Lord Jesus Christ all owner ship o f himself and of everything he possessed. The deed was- in due form, with all the peculiarities and formalities of such conveyances. I think I have it still, among my papers. He appeared to be in solemn earnest and, so far as I could see, was entirely intelligent in what he did.”

But Gungu said: “ Teacher, I want to study geography!” And the missionary asked: “Gungu, why do you want to study geography.?” “I want to study geography to know: the names of more places to pray for,” he said. He was a Christian. The Lord Jesus Christ was living actually in that heart. Are you praying for the lost in China, in India) in Africa, in America? Do you love soulsaB You can’t work up such a love. It comes from Christ.

“ I planted a little tree,” said a monk, “and I prayed, ‘Lord, send rain to nourish its life.’ ” And presently the environing earth was cool with refreshing showers. “And now, Lord, send sun shine to give it vigor,” and under the expanding influence of the sun its rootlets struck deeper into the friendly soil. Time passed, and the monk said, “ Send frost, Lord, to toughen its fiber,” and the frost came with its icy touch, and in the morning when the sun was shining in his strength, the little tree died. “ I, too, planted a little tree,” said his brother monk, “but I committed it to the care o f my heavenly Father, and, behold, my little tree lives.”

A doctor, after prescribing for .a patient, called the next day to see how he was getting on, and found he was much better. “I see that the medicine has done you good,” said the doctor. “Yes,” replied the patient; “but, you see, I had great faith in the medicine.” “You might have had great faith in it; but if I' had given you the wrong medicine, it would have done you harm, not good,” said the doctor. Only if faith Jjas the right object does it avail.

A.laborer, standing outside the Cologne Cathedral, overheard a traveler admiring the beauty of the structure. “Yes,” said the workman, “it’s a fine looking building, and took us many a year to finish.” “ Took you !” exclaimed the tourist. “Why, what did you have to do with it?!’ “ I mixed the mortar, sir,” he replied proudly. The Work o f constructing the Panama Canal is said to have depended largely upon six spiders. The webs. which they spun were used for dividing into sections the lenses of the surveying instruments, that the surveyors might make no mistake. Nothing else suitable could be found. Thus it is in the Lord’s work. There are in the church those of great ability, men who are in places of leadership and wide influence, and who are accomplishing “ great things for the Lord” ; then there are those of small power, in humble and obscure situations, whose service receives little notice. Yet how important'is that service! -And how much may depend upon it!

The story is told of aniSuntutored and untaught man who was summoned to service of great importance. He had to appear before men of high state and social standing. The untaught man had accomplished what few men could do. He had never been to college but had knowledge which no college can impart to any -man. He felt a timidity in sitting in session with men of degrees and distinction. A man is not made by the honors men. bestow upon him; he is made before men bestow and honor. While'- present with the dignitaries to which we have above referred, one of them asked a very rude and uncalled-for ques-. tion : “What university did you attend?” Without hesitation or signs of slightest embarrassment, the rugged-hearted, disciplined man replied, “ I went through the University o f Adversity.” This was a striking and stunning reply. The man who asked it was, ashamed; those who heard the reply were brought to tears, and the man who made the reply was lifted into high estimation. There are a good many who know nothing o f the University of Adversity. They have been in other schools, but not in this one. They got what other universities could give, but have none o f that which only the University of Adversity can supply.

There is in the Church of St. Peter’s at Rome a very won derful painting, but it is so far up in- the heights of the great dome that the eye is unable to discern its marvelous beauty and significance. . To overcome this difficulty, an ingenious arrange ment was conceived by the idea of placing a large mirror near the floor, and there, reflected in the mirror, can be easily seen the great masterpiece. So, in like manner, the glory of God as seen in the heavenly heights by celestial beings, we could not as mor tals behold; but God has given us a manifestation, the epiphany of Himself, in His beloved Son, who has brought down in the

That native Christian, Gungu, came to the missionary•one. day and said: “Missionary, I want to study geography!” “ No,” said the missionary, “you don’t want to study geogra phy. You have only been a Christian for a few months, and there are other more important subj ects for you to take up first.”
