meeting addressed by Sir A. Conan Doyle, that it was impossible at this time of day to regard Spiritualism as something to be laughed out of court.’ There he is certainly right. As well try and laugh Satan out of court. Spiritism is far too solemn a matter to be met with laughter. It should be opposed with voice, pen and prayer by every true servant of Christ.” EDDYISM In the Church Herald of recent date appears ah editorial under the above heading, in which was incorporated a letter sent them by Brother C. B. Mc Williams, who has recently lost a daugh ter. She had tuberculosis, and some time since took the influenza on Satur day and died on Monday. She had been in touch with Christian Science, and after her death this letter, which had been addressed to her by a Christian Science practitioner, was found in her room. It reads as follows: “ Dear Mrs. Andrews: The victory for truth was won Saturday night and Sun day morning, and was due to your changing your mind about the seeming lies of mortal mind. Your continued improvement will be due to your refusal to accept the different lies of sense— testimony as they present themselves. I want you to say mentally and vigor ously, ‘You are a liar, and I know you are one,’ to each discordant manifesta tion, and say it not once, but as often as necessary. Mr. W. Hoste, the missionary, re ferring to the way some ministers apolo gize for Spiritualism, says the following: “ Surely, what we want today is men who will call things by their proper names, and not justify with faint blame what God styles ‘abomination.’ What could be more formal and inclusive than His Word in Deut. 18:10-12? ‘There shall not be found among you anyone that . . . useth divination, or an ob server of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer, for all who do these things are an abomination unto the Lord.’ “ It is quite gratuitous to assert that what is condemned in the Bible is some thing more akin to African witchcraft, and must not be confounded with mod ern Spiritism. As one who has had some opportunities of knowing at first hand African witch-doctors and their ways, I do not believe there is any proof of essential difference between what is forbidden in Holy Scripture and prac tised in Central Africa and in our midst today. Probably ‘modern Spiritism,’ as a cankerous growth out of professedly Christian teaching, is the worst of the three, as ‘the corruption of the best is the worst.’ The teachings of Spiritism, though admitting a future state, are in flagrant contradiction with ‘the Word and the testimony,’ as to God, Christ, sin, atonement, and future judgment, and therefore ‘there is no light in them’ (Isa. 8:19-20). Why seek for light where there is only darkness? Bishop Welldon is reported to have said, at a
