maimed men, for our innumerable widows and orphaned children, and that is original sin and the corruption of man’s heart. If man can look only to powers in herent in himself, then "the world is heading not for the millennium, but for the abyss. “ Except a man be.born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Now it is just at that point' that the Christian Gospel meets us. It declares, that in Christ the re-creative power of God operates in us and upon us, and that in Him men become redeemed and re-created and restored. And the decla ration of our Gospel is ratified and con firmed by the facts of experience. We are not speaking things that we do not know. “We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen.” We are not speculating or theorizing, but we are speaking of something that we ourselves have felt that Christ can do for us. The passions that no human chains can bind, our Lord, thank God, can tame. He does eradicate out of men’s hearts the tiger and the beast. He does quicken into newness o f life those who werë dead in trespasses and sins. Fierce, wild, destructive human nature sits at the feet of Christ clothed and in its right mind. And therein lies the world’s hope.— Rev. J. D. Jones at Northfield Conference. Anthony Collins, the Freethinker, once met a plain countryman going to church. “Well now, tell me,” said Col lins, “ is your God a great God or a little God?” The countryman replied: “ He is so great, sir, that the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him, and so little that He can dwell in my heart.” Collins afterward declared that this simple answer had more effect upon his mind than all the theologians had writ ten against him.
