Note: These guidelines do not apply to those in the clinical track. For these individuals, the College of Medicine Guidelines should be followed.

Introduction: The Department of Pathology shares the College of Medicine's (COM) mission of excellence in education, research and patient care. Due to the unique mix of clinical and research activities within the Department, the faculty have put forth the following modifications and clarifications to the COM faculty guidelines. Consistent with the overall criteria for scholarship and excellence, these amendments are intended to clarify expectations that are unique to the educational and research missions of the Department of Pathology. The guidelines listed here relate to teaching and to visibility within ones research field. The Department of Pathology will follow the COM general faculty guidelines in all other areas.

I. Teaching

Typical teaching activities related to Research Tracks in the Department of Pathology. While research faculty are encouraged to teach in medical school courses, it is recognized that these opportunities are subject to course requirements and therefore may not be available to basic researchers within the Department. As a result, most of the teaching opportunities available to research faculty within the Department involve the Pathology and Molecular Medicine (PMM) graduate program which is run jointly with the Department of Internal Medicine. The following table breaks down typical teaching activities performed by Pathology research faculty. These are categorized into a three-tier teaching effort level (TEL) system that reflects the amounts of time, commitment and teaching dedication required for each: Teaching effort level 1: • Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine (PMM) journal club {individual sessions, at least once per year). • Supervision of PMM rotation students in laboratory (once per year). • Supervision of high school or summer students that lead to presentations (once per year). • Participation in student seminars (2 times per quarter). • Serving on a student examination committee. Teaching effort level 2: • Recurring lectures in team-taught courses (at least 2 contact hours per semester, with satisfactory student and course director reviews)

-

• Serving on a student dissertation committee. • Active in-lab training of a post-doctoral fellow. • Running a quarterly journal club. • Serving on the PMM graduate program committee. • Winning a Departmental teaching award. • Serving as student academic advisor (e.g. for all 1 5 1 , 2 nd , or 3

rd yr students)
