Although not a requirement, it is generally favorable if applicants for tenure have at least one student pursuing a graduate degree within their laboratory. II. Visibility and service to one's research field Visibility and service to the field includes several activities which are essential to the research community. Because these activities reflect a certain level of stature and bring notoriety to the institution, the Department of Pathology includes them in evaluating faculty according to the following categories and expectations.

Level2. • invited speaker at regional meetings • invited speaker at a university or research institution other than UC • oral presentations at national meetings (refereed abstracts) • organizing committee f o r regional meeting • grant reviewer for research societies (e.g. American Heart Assn., American
Diabetes Assn., Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and others) • Ad hoc study section member for a national study section
