The Dollars & Sense Of Bethlehem’s National Historic Landmark District Bethlehem, PA – Fourteen acres of downtown Bethlehem’s historic district were declared a National Historic Landmark District by the United States Department of Interior last fall and this spring CREW Lehigh Valley held a lunchtime session to understand the economic impact of the new status. One of only eight such districts in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and just 2,500 nationwide, the Bethlehem district is recognized for representing an outstanding aspect of American history and culture for 18th Century Moravian architecture and town planning.

About 40 members and guests of CREW Lehigh Valley gathered in the Saal of the Geimanhaus for a presenta- tion led by Charlene Donchez Mowers, President, Historic BethlehemMuseum&Historic Sites (HBMHS). Real estate professionals who deal with the long permitting process of modern construction chuckled over Ms. Mower’s ob- servation that the first phase of the five-story structure was built in just three months in 1741, which included time for logging the trees. The largest 18th Century log house in continuous use in the US and now a museum, the building had been a residence until the 1960s. Ms. Mow- ers recapped the arduous application process to win the Historic Landmark District Designation

Dr. Watkins, Arthur F. Searing Professor of Economics, College of Business and Economics, Lehigh University, examined the positive economic impact the designation has on the city and region at large due to expanded tour- ism, enhanced property values, an increasing interest in revitalization and economic development, quality of life issues and positive environmental impacts.

Bill Bumber, senior prop- erty manager a Liberty Property Trust, discussed the public-private part- nership spearheaded by Liberty to fund streetscape improvements. In collabo- ration with the City of Beth- lehem, Liberty developed funding for further brand- ing the historic district by embedding a large granite, precision laser-cut Bethle- hem star in the center of the intersection at Main and Market Streets.
