KEYSTROKE MONTHLY THE

NOVEMBER 2019 THE BEST HOLIDAY OF THE YEAR

A Day of Friends, Good Food, and Charity

O ver the years, Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday. I don’t know exactly why, but people just seem to be in a better mood. It’s a great time to relax with family and friends. You just don’t have the stress of decorating and gift shopping that comes with the Christmas season. Instead of fretting about what we don’t have yet, we get to reflect on everything we’re thankful for. How I’ve celebrated Thanksgiving over the years has changed. When I was growing up, I could always expect my extended family to journey from all over the United States to Duncan, Oklahoma, my hometown. When I was in college, I became one of the family members who made the trip back to Duncan, and one of the things I was always most thankful for during those Thanksgivings was my mom’s home cooking. Later, when I coached basketball, I had to celebrate away from my extended family for about 20 years because basketball season always began during the last week of November. But, I got to share Thanksgiving Dinner with the team during those years, and reflect on all what we all had to be grateful for in our lives. In recent years, Thanksgiving has consisted of two main traditions for my wife Marilyn and me. Nine years ago, one of my friends from my tennis club started a fundraiser called Turkey Tennis. Every year on Thanksgiving morning, tennis players of all skill levels get together to play tennis, and to donate money to God’s Pantry. Last year, nearly 50 people signed up to play. It’s great starting off the holiday with a little bit of exercise for a good cause. Since Turkey Tennis began, we’ve raised over $26,000 to feed hungry people all over Kentucky. Later in the day, Marilyn and I go to a Thanksgiving dinner hosted by another one of our tennis club friends. He affectionately calls it his “orphan” Thanksgiving dinner because he hosts it for anyone who doesn’t have family in the area. Since our families all live in Oklahoma and New York, we really enjoy this Thanksgiving dinner tradition. It’s a great time to see old friends and to make some new ones, too.

All in all, I’m happy for the traditions I get to take part in on Thanksgiving. And, a little earlier in the month, I’m proud to honor those who have served in our Armed Forces on Veterans Day. In fact, getting to celebrate those two holidays within weeks of each other makes November my favorite month. Whatever you’re doing this Thanksgiving, whether you’re spending time with friends in town or traveling to see family, we hope you all have a relaxing, safe holiday. Happy Thanksgiving! -Doug Barnes

GET READY FOR GOOD NUTRITION IN NOVEMBER!

3 Tips to Get Your Picky Eaters to Eat the Veggies Their Bodies Need

1. LET THEM HELP.

It might seem strange that November — when millions of Americans gather around the dinner table to show gratitude through lavish Thanksgiving feasts — has recently been dubbed Good Nutrition Month. But it’s true; now is the time to pay extra attention to the nutrients your body needs to maintain its healthy state through the new year. the holiday season kicks into full gear, it becomes much easier to overlook. With colder weather keeping you inside, the cravings for heartier meals and delicious baked goods leave parents struggling to encourage their picky eaters to consume anything nutritious. If you’re finding it more difficult than usual to convince your child to eat their greens, here are some tips to keep in mind! While mindful eating is a habit families know they should practice year-round, once

color will mask the inclusion, ensuring your little one gets a good share of fiber-rich nutrients while being none the wiser.

If your child has grown out of the toddler stage and is still resistant to eating their vegetables, child psychologists say you should have them help with the cooking process. The excitement and anticipation that comes with getting to prepare the vegetables can encourage kids to try a couple bites during dinnertime. Cheese can undoubtedly make veggies more appealing for your little ones. When making their favorite mac ‘n’ cheese dish, consider adding broccoli and peas to the sauce. The cheese will mask most of the veggie flavor, and your kids won’t care as much! Another option for really picky eaters is to purée vegetables, like sweet potatoes, into the cheese sauce. 3. GET ‘BEEFY’ WITH YOUR VEGGIES.

If your kids are fans of meat-based pasta sauces, meatballs, or sloppy Joes, you can substitute some of the ground beef with finely chopped mushrooms. Since the meaty texture of the tasty fungi is similar to ground beef, it’ll be hard for kids to notice the difference. Riced cauliflower can also be mistaken for tender ground beef when cooked in darker sauces and gravies. While it can be frustrating to negotiate with a picky eater, especially during the holidays, don’t lose hope. Try out these three tasty tips and observe Good Nutrition Month with a little more ease.

No Questions Asked Anyone who has been through the job-search process knows just how frustrating it can be. All sorts of obstacles can turn even the most qualified applicants away, but for job seekers who have disabilities, have spent time in prison, or who are otherwise marginalized, those obstacles can be impossible to surmount. However, one bakery in Yonkers, New York, shows that hiring applicants based on their willingness to work, rather than an applicant’s background, can actually create a thriving business and help rebuild a community.

Greyston Bakery began in 1982, founded by Bernie Glassman. He and his wife had a vision for a business that wouldn’t just make money, but would also give back to the community by providing things such as health care, social services, housing, and childcare for the struggling members of the Yonkers community. After 37 years, Greyston Health Services, Inc., the nonprofit arm of Greyston Bakery, does just that. Currently, Greyston Bakery employs 150 full-time workers, and they are ranked in the top 10% of B Corporations worldwide. He almost went back to a life of selling drugs to make ends meet, but instead, he got a job offer at Greyston. Ten years and several promotions later, Dion owns a car and a three- bedroom house where he, his fiancée, and his kids live. “I accomplished all the goals I set out for myself,” said Drew in an interview. “I want to be a positive influence now. I want to see Yonkers and my community grow.”

THE REALITY OF HOME SECURITY 3 Common Home Security Myths Debunked

HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS DON’T DETER INTRUDERS

Home security may seem pretty straightforward, but countless myths persist — and abiding by any of these myths could mean losing your peace of mind. So, if you’ve ever believed any of these common misconceptions about protecting your home, you might want to think again. BURGLARS MOSTLY BREAK IN AT NIGHT Despite what you might see on TV, most break-ins occur during the daytime when all the occupants of the home are at work or at school. A nighttime burglary may mean you could catch the perpetrator in the act, but protecting your home when it’s most likely to be burglarized is possible with a good home security system. BREAK-INS ARE LESS LIKELY IN RURAL AREAS Just because fewer people reside in the immediate vicinity of your home doesn’t mean you’re safer. In 2007, one study found that burglary rates were 30% higher in the rural Pocono Mountain region than they were in the nearby Philadelphia Metro Area. Another study found that the risk of injury or death as a result of violent crime or accidents is 20% more likely in rural areas than in urban areas. So, having neighbors a half-mile down the road doesn’t make your property burglary-proof.

Wherever you live, we can help you make it safe. Burglary is a crime of opportunity. Eighty-three percent of burglars interviewed in one study said they would check for an alarm before they robbed a house, and if one was present, they would find a different target. Most also said they would abandon a break- in if they triggered an alarm. Burglars always look for the houses with the fewest obstacles, so anything from simple deadbolt locks to state-of-the-art security systems can deter intruders.

CELEBRATING GIVING TUESDAY Supporting the People You Believe In

November is usually all about Thanksgiving, but it isn’t the only holiday that encourages generosity. Giving Tuesday is a phenomenal celebration in which millions of people from across the globe are inspired to spend 24 hours giving back to the communities they love.

generosity on a global scale using the hashtag #GivingTuesday. The website states that “... technology and social media could be used to make generosity go viral; that people fundamentally want to give and talk about giving.” Through massive social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the individuals and companies participating in Giving Tuesday can spread their missions and messages all over the world, encouraging others to do the same.

ORIGIN AND GOAL GIVING Tuesday is celebrated every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and this year, the holiday lands on Dec. 3! It was established in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation and New York’s 92nd Street Y as a response to consumer-driven holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE Now is the perfect opportunity to support your community and the causes you believe in. The best part of this holiday is that “giving” doesn’t just refer to donating money. People can give back by volunteering their time to help a nonprofit business, donating goods and food, or just buying a stranger some lunch. Even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact.

The purpose of the holiday was to spread the spirit of giving, not only for the people in our

nation but individuals across the world. The goal is “to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day and touches every person on the planet.”

If you’re interested in participating in Giving Tuesday, get together with your friends, family, sports team members, or neighbors to brainstorm on how you can give back. To learn more about how you can participate, visit GivingTuesday.org .

TECHNOLOGY AT ITS BEST Through the use of social media and technology, the organization hopes to encourage and spread
