Following the successful refurbishment of Dunnes Stores’ flagship St. Stephen’s Green location, Ardmac was appointed to deliver the upgrade and refurbishment of two additional retail units in Cork as part of the brand’s nationwide modernisation programme. Both stores underwent extensive internal refurbishment and full fit-out works across single-floor layouts, with significant upgrades to both Grocery and Textile departments. The aim was to align each store with Dunnes’ refreshed retail standard, enhancing customer experience, operational efficiency, and overall presentation. To maintain full trading continuity, the works were carefully phased, with a large proportion delivered during night-time hours between 11pm and 5am. Each morning, completed areas were fully cleaned, secured, and handed back to ensure uninterrupted store operations. In Ballyvolane, the scope included extensions to the grocery stockroom and retail floorplate, removal of the existing ATM enclosure, relocation of the main mall entrance, installation of a new feature display window to the south-west elevation, and associated façade re- cladding and external upgrades.
At Bandon Road Shopping Centre, works included an extension for online grocery storage, a new loading bay with canopy, and internal reconfiguration and fit-out of the retail floorplate, delivered to a standard consistent with the Ballyvolane project. Working in live retail environments required detailed planning, precise coordination, and close communication with store teams. Logistics for deliveries, material handling, and waste removal were tightly controlled through a structured programme agreed with the client, subcontractors, and staff, ensuring safe, efficient delivery with minimal disruption to trading. ‘Today, a contractor must do far more than simply build; they need a highly coordinated and professional team to maximise a project’s potential while maintaining strong focus on quality, programme, and cost.
