SOUTHEASTERN PROVINCE

pointed to serve as the legal repre- sentative for the Southeastern Prov- ince by Past Province Polemarch, Solomon S. Bradley. Serving in that role, as well as, the risk manager for the province, allowed me to use my legal skills to steer the province in its decision making when the Board of Directors were making a decision." And now, as Province Polemarch he believes he administers the role in a "just and fair manner." "One of my primary duties is to provide guidance and direction to each chapter in my province and to members as individ- uals. I interact with many members and committees on various levels throughout the fraternity, as well as, Deans of Students and College Presidents. I try to interact with and visit as many chapters as I can because it’s important that brothers have an opportunity to interact with their Province Polemarch. We worry about many different things, with the most being hazing; but budget- ing, running province councils, and making sure we have training programs that benefit our under- graduates, as well as reinforce some training to alumni members, are roles that we think about all of the time." The Journal had to ask why be be- lieved his province was first among equals. "I believe the Southeast- ern Province is the best province because we are at the forefront of this fraternity. The reason you see many brothers serving on national

committees is because we have the experience that allows us to continue moving up the ladder in the fraternity. For instance, the Southeastern Province was the very first province that instituted electronic voting. Now, we have been able to share with other prov- inces that have asked how we have instituted that particular endeavor. My Achievement Academy chair- man, Brother Christopher Johnson, last year instituted new initiatives regarding our Achievement Academy and it has been adopted by the na- tional Achievement Academy com- mittee. Our Guide Right programs, as well as our Senior Kappa Affairs, throughout the province is second to none and that’s why Brothers Oscar Neely and John Stewart, respectively serve as either co-chairmen or chair- men of national committees just to name a few; and there are so many others. I simply surround myself with good, hardworking brothers and they work extremely hard for this province. I may get the accolades of their hard work as the Province Polemarch, but it is truly deserved by them for their commitment to this province and I will always shine that light on the hardworking broth- ers in this province." "Our motto this year is “The Year of the Undergraduate.” We are trying to give them more leadership responsibilities and training opportunities that they can use when the graduate college. No longer is corporate America the only avenue available when one

leaves college. We try to expose our undergraduates to brothers that have excelled in entrepreneurship such as owing their own franchisees, excelling in the military and the arts, because they must know there are many different avenues to choose from - at least more than we had upon graduation." As to advice for newly initiated Kappas, he stated, "I think the most important advice that I can give someone who wants to enter the legal profession is to have a superior command of the English language. I think English majors are prime can- didates to succeed in the law field. We write, more than we speak, and it gives you an advantage in law school. In addition, that individual

should surround him or herself with people who are working in the legal field already and get a good under- standing as to what they do. The legal profession expands so many other fields that you are no longer confined to the courtroom and can use your legal skills in almost any profession. Find a good mentor, in- form him or her what you would like to gain from being around them and see if they will allow you to become a mentee. I don’t mean somebody you see once or twice a year. I mean a mentor that believes in you as much as you believe in yourself."
