TO THE CHAPTER INVISIBLE

the 94-by-50 piece of hardwood where he made his living and crafted his legend. And then Brother Jobe again shifted gears from the game of basketball to the kids that played the game. He started with the HBCUs. “HBCUs have mentored and nurtured young black males from dysfunctional families and poor families since slavery. Whereas the white universities, that wasn’t their job. I understand that, and I’m not knocking them. They didn’t have to do this. The white kids came from very stable families and they didn’t need the university for that. They just needed the university to teach them reading, writing and arithmetic. But the HBCUs have always had that job of helping youngsters people identify themselves, to know who you are. I’ve used this my whole career. I ask kids the “four W’s’’ - who are you, what are you, why are you on this earth, and where are you going? If you can get them to grasp those four W’s, then they can make it in the world. Brother Ben Jobe’s impact on basketball is reflected in the presentation of the Ben Jobe Award. This award is presented annually to the top minority coach in division 1 men’s basketball, which annually goes to the top minority coach in Division I basketball. This is a peek into the Ben Jobe as a champion for civil rights. I have asked the Grand Historian to find a place in the “Story of Kappa Alpha Psi’ so that our his- tory reports what the media misses, often on purpose.
