Hiking, Community, Safety & Education The Estrella Trailblazers began in 2013 as a fun, welcoming hiking group created to encourage hikers of all skill levels to get outdoors and enjoy our beautiful local trail systems. While that remains at the heart of the group today, the Trailblazers have grown into a much larger community with an increased focus on hiking safety, education and preparedness. The group’s current volunteer leadership team includes Fred Wordell, Monika Hirsh and Mary Nunn. Fred is a wealth of information and regularly shares his extensive knowledge of the trails. Monika is an amazing athlete who enjoys leading longer, more challenging hikes for experienced hikers. Mary is known for leading beginner hikes and encouraging new members as they build their confidence on the trails. The leadership team is also supported by additional volunteer hike leaders who generously give their time to make a wide variety of hikes possible. Each month during hiking season (October - April), the Estrella Trailblazers publish a hiking calendar
included participation from members of Goodyear Police and Fire, local physical therapists and wildlife experts, along with the Trailblazers’ own experienced hike leaders. Our next Free Hiking Seminar will be held November 18, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Starpointe Residents Club in Estrella. For registration information, visit Estrella Trailblazers Facebook page.

While most hikes take place throughout the Estrella area, the Trailblazers also explore other outstanding trails across the greater Phoenix area. Some hikes are geared towards Grand Canyon hiking preparedness. Education and safety are also an important part of the Trailblazers’ mission. Each year, the group hosts a free hiking seminar focused on helping hikers become safer, better prepared and more knowledgeable on the trails. Past seminars have
