Ready for Another Fantastic Year? At Estrella Mountain Elementary School (EMES), home of the Cougars, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!” Under the leadership of Principal, Lynzee Booras, the school has earned an “A” grade from the state over the last four years. The EMES philosophy is that every student can achieve at high levels, and deserves to feel known, valued, challenged, and supported. The Cougar family supports students in developing the knowledge, skills, confidence, and character to be successful in all areas of their lives. Members of Cougar Community Volunteers (CCV) provide important support for students, teachers and staff during the school day by doing the “usual” duties as lunch monitors & crosswalk guards, and copy room captains. We’re excited now to expand opportunities for volunteers beyond the “usual”. Some of us work directly with students in the Read Live Lab, part the highly successful EMES Walk to Read program. It focuses primarily on K – 2 readers to prepare them
for success in the 3 rd grade transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Last year, EMES implemented Move to Math, a school-wide intervention and enrichment structure modeled after Walk to Read. Move to Math is supplementary time devoted to math at the end of every school day. The program aims to meet learners where they are and support them in filling knowledge gaps, supplementing grade-level skills, or exploring advanced math concepts. During Move to Math, CCV volunteers focus on supporting learners who have gaps in their math knowledge. Community members are invited to bring their skills, knowledge and caring ways to Cougar Community Volunteers as we support the students, teachers and staff of EMES. A series of informational meetings will be held each week in October for people who want to learn more about the program and specific opportunities to make a difference at EMES.
