Every Wednesday evening, Marley Park residents have the opportunity to step into a tradition that blends movement, rhythm, and community connection: Capoeira. This Afro-Brazilian martial art is unlike anything else. It weaves together elements of dance, music, acrobatics, and playful strategy, creating an experience that is as joyful as it is physically engaging. Classes are held from 6:30 to 7:30 PM at the Poolhouse multi-purpose room, and they are open to anyone 13 years and older. All levels are welcome, from complete beginners to those who may already have some experience with Capoeira or other martial arts. What makes Capoeira special is its accessibility. The focus is not just on physical strength but also on creativity, rhythm, and connection with others. Capoeira originated in Brazil more than 400 years ago, developed by enslaved Africans who disguised martial training within music and dance. Today, it is practiced worldwide as both a sport and cultural art form. A typical class combines music and movement, with participants learning not only the physical Capoeira
techniques but also traditional instruments and songs. The “roda,” or circle, is where Capoeira truly comes alive. Students take turns playing, sparring, and responding to the rhythm of the berimbau and drums. Residents who have joined the class say it is more than just a workout. It is an energizing way to connect with others, express creativity, and experience a piece of living history. The atmosphere is supportive and welcoming, encouraging participants to push their limits while having fun.
