College – Issue 35

The final was against Auckland champions St Kentigern, who defeated College team for the second time in the week, this time by 1–0. It was a great week of hockey for College and capped off a very good season for the squad. The College U15 side travelled to Hamilton for this year’s Tanner Cup. The side lost their first pool game to eventual winners Palmerston North Boys’ High School, before a 0–0 draw against John McGlashan College. The draw meant the team missed out on the knockout phase due to goal difference. It should be noted John McGlashan also went on to make the final. In the final three matches the team had wins over StAC and New Plymouth Boys’ High School, and a thrilling 2–2 draw with Wellington College to finish 9th. In the local CHA competition, College’s 2nd XI finished 5th, despite competing very well with the top teams in Division 1. In Division 2, both the 3rd XI and Colts teams made the semi-finals, with the 3rd XI going on to make

the final and finish runners-up. The Youth Black team lost their semi- final but won a dramatic penalty shootout to claim 3rd place in Division 3. Badminton/Squash/Table Tennis The College winter racquet sports of badminton, table tennis and squash compete in the local CSS competition. The top College badminton side of Ralph Chiang, Josh Ting, Thimeth Wijesinghe and Luke Murch competed in the Premier competition to finish 5th at the end of the season. In table tennis, two College sides competed in finals. The College C1 team finished 2nd in the grade, while the top College team won their final against Emmanuel Christian School to claim the B grade title. The College team was Steven Zhang, Justin Yin, Matthew O’Connor and Callum McLean.

3rd in the C grade, 3rd and 4th in the B grade, and 4th in the A grade. The A team had a very competitive season to finish 4th. The College A squash side was Josh Murison, Tristyn Stark, Angus Oh, Blake McGuigan, Tim Bassett and Billy Harrison. Harriers During the winter season, a number of College runners competed in the road race and cross country events held in Canterbury and nationally. In Canterbury, the CSS road race and cross country are two key events. In the road race, held at the Canterbury AMP showgrounds, Jasper Moss was 3rd in the AWD class, Sam Idiens 5th in U16 grade, and Dion Houston 5th in the Senior 4km race. The CSS cross country championships were held at the old Ascot Golf Course, with Jasper Moss claiming the AWD title, and Sam Idiens (5th) and Kyle Houston (9th) finishing in the top 10 in the U16 grade.
