Inspiration and aspirations
Batsman and wicket keeper Kurtis Weeks was very fortunate this year to make his second College cricket tour to Singapore and England.
The captain of the 1st XI first went on tour as a Year 10 student in the Development team in 2015.
“I was the youngest on tour that time, and all the older boys were very good about including me – and I really enjoyed the cricket. The weather was better then. This time quite a few of our games were rained off. I really enjoyed going back to see again some of the amazing schools, recognising their historical importance and cricket grounds. It was a real privilege to go to the UK, which is, after all, the home of cricket.” Kurtis, who comes from Napier in Hawke’s Bay, says cricket is beyond a pastime for him and he has taken it seriously for quite a while now, aspiring to make the Central District U19 team this summer. Before then is the secondary schools' summer season and, with the Singapore and English tour fresh in mind, he is determined his play will emulate the calibre of some of that which the College boys witnessed. “We saw some fantastic players, and we learnt about the way cricket should be played – the way it was intended to be played when it was introduced. College is working hard to ensure we follow that spirit.” Kurtis said rained off games in England meant more time for exploring London and he enjoyed all the opportunities to immerse himself in a huge cosmopolitan city. “Embracing the culture and experiencing everything we could was fantastic. I’ve been so lucky to have had this opportunity.”
