VALUE FROM DATA The benefits to Mälarenergi and our customers are that we can see in detail how the heat, cooling and electricity are produced, along with the customer demand patterns. This information gives a better understanding of when and what should be generated. We want to optimize the entire production of district heating from the data we are collecting and create a visualization of it, so we can see how much heat we must produce each hour. A challenge faced by the team, which is common to many digitization projects, was the quality of the data available. It is crucial to have the right amount of data collected at the right sampling interval. The first step is to ensure that all the data is available and then pick out which data is most useful. We want to have a 15-minute online sampling of the data, and that has been a challenge. Online meters with 15-minute collection intervals are being installed all over the district heating network, but for now, most of the data is collected hourly, which is not online. We have a lot of different systems from which we need to collect data before making it available in one place for the new platform. To improve the availability of data, we have installed new online meters that collect data at the required intervals. Currently, we can obtain the data that we want from all the different systems, so the next step is to start to create the visualization of the district heating network and then begin building some smart solutions, KPIs and dashboards for working with the system.
The common trend for any energy company is to do more with the data and create smart solutions and offers for customers. We must step it up a notch. We aim to be able to use data from across our plant and create smart solutions based on this information. Success from any project like this requires collaboration. This project is a result of collective efforts between industry and end customers, from which we will deliver a system that is usable and delivers tangible benefits.
