Dan started in the construction industry at fifteen years old, pushing a wheel barrel of concrete for a home foundation that weighed more than he did. He graduated from Duncan MacMillan High School as valedictorian and went on to pursue his engineering diploma at St. Francis Xavier University and received his Civil Engineering degree from the Technical Univer- sity of Nova Scotia (now Dalhousie University) in 1993. Working for Atlantic Industries and Dexter Construction and now almost twelve years in business with his own company, with thousands of renovations completed, many of which can be viewed in the galleries on www.monkreno.com. It goes without saying that Monk has the cre- dentials, but their business can be attributed to building solid relationships with his clients and earning the respected reputation as a leader in the industry.

“being a professional engineer and a Red Seal carpenter is a rare com- bination in the renova- tion business,”

Now that we know what motivates Dan on a project, we wanted to get a better understand- ing of how he is able to build his construction business when it seems that there is a new con- struction company or person offering the same services popping up every day especially with the current market demand. Dan’s answer was simple and to the point saying that, “every renovation starts with a solid foun- dation of trust.” He explains that “being a pro- fessional engineer and a Red Seal carpenter is a rare combination in the renovation business,” he goes on to say that, “for some people, seeing those credentials means a lot – and when they

see that I’m also genuinely interested in building a professional relationship with them, it often seals the deal.” It goes without saying that Monk has the credentials, but their business can be attributed to building solid relationships with his clients and earning the respected reputation as a leader in the industry.
