An intensive course covering essentials of grammar and a minimum number of characters. Readings and conversation based on simple texts. Five hours each week.

Expansion of vocabulary and number of characters. Read ings in popular Japanese tales. Five hours each week.

Basic grammar and simple composition, conversation and reading of simple texts. Five hours each week.
201. PORTUGUESE. (4)
Advanced grammar and composition, conversation and read ings in the literature of Brazil and Portugal. Five hours each week.
Spanish Students who have taken 2 years of high school Spanish may not take Spanish 101 for credit. Students with 3 or 4 years of high school Spanish should consult with department for proper placement. Students whose native language is Spanish may not take lower division courses for credit. Department Major: 24 upper division units, including Spanish 301, 302, or equivalent.

301, 302. ADVANCED CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION. (3, 3)
Advanced work in conversation, reading, and writing Span ish. Prerequisite to further advanced courses. Prerequisites: for 301, 201, or equivalent; for 302, 301 or equivalent.
