The purpose of this Department is to meet the constantly growing need for better trained missionaries by offering specially designed courses to emphasize the practical problems of missionary work. In addition to the classroom work and research, the stu­ dent will find ample opportunity for personal consultation with missionaries and missionary executives. Arrangements have been made also to give those minoring in Missions the opportunity to participate in actual missionary work in Cuba under the auspices of the Practical Missionary Training, directed by Mr. Smith. ^ 0 1 . MISSIONS I. (2) 1 An introduction to missions with th e , Christian’s responsibility in giving the Gospel to the whole world, viewed from the Riblical, philosophical, and practical stand- , points. (2) A survey course, tracing the history of missions from apostolic times to the present, with special attention given to the study of mission fields, mission societies, and the biographies of individual missionaries. 301. MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM AMONG SPANISH SPEAKING PEOPLES. (2) A study of the problems peculiar to work among Spanish speaking people and of the best methods to be used in evangelizing them. 302. MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM IN AFRICA. (2) A survey of the field, including the spread of Islam, political pressures, comity agreements, and indigenous work. .Emphasis upon the work of the missionary in the evangelization of Africa. 309. JEW ISH MISSIONS. (2) A study of the history of the Jews, their festivals and customs, their fundamental beliefs, objections to Christianity, and effective methods for their evangelization. 310. MISSIONARY ORIENTATION. (3) £ study of the actual methods and problems of missionary work, with emphasis on the indigenous church, and the missionary’s relationship to his fellow-workers his mission board, governments, and his supporters at home. 311. MISSIONARY SEMINAR. (3) . A PfQptical and correlative course, showing the relationship of all missionary sub­ jects. Special investigation of present missionary opportunities, using the latest films and missionaries from various parts of the world. 313. NON-CHRISTIAN RELIGIONS. (2) A study of the present-day religions of the world, presenting their philosophies doctrines, and practices. 401-402. PHONETICS I, II. (2-2) A study of the articulate sounds of human speech with an analysis of English speech and sounds peculiar to the mission fields. The classification, reproduction, and proper recording of unfamiliar speech-sounds. 403. MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM IN THE ORIENT. (2) A survey of current missionary activity in Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, etc., together with the problems peculiar to each field. Emphasis on the best methods ot evangelism for each racial group. 404. MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM IN INDIA. (2) A study of the Indians’ customs and philosophies in the endeavor to formulate effective means of evangelism. 406. MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM IN EUROPE. (2) A study of the conditions which have produced this “ new” mission field, together with a consideration of the various ideologies in vogue, and practical suggestions on evangelizing the various groups of people. 407-408. MISSIONARY SCIENCE I-II. (2-2) . A comprehensive study of world missions designed for students working toward oni ono i Cceaential with missionary service in view.
