The Department has as its aim a thorough grounding in the field of New Testa­ ment and Hellenistic Greek hy providing the student with a thorough knowledge of the grammar and syntax of the language and a general acquaintance with Hellenistic Greek literature. 201-202. NEW TESTAMENT GREEK. (4-4) An introduction to the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of New Testament Greek with practice in reading simple passages from the Greek New Testament. 301-302. READINGS IN NEW TESTAMENT GREEK. (2-2) Prerequisite: Greek 201-202, or equivalent. The reading of selected passages from the New Testament. Emphasis on grammar, syntax, and vocabulary with a view to facility in reading. 401. READINGS IN HELLEN ISTIC GREEK. (2) Prerequisite: two years of Greek. The reading of selected passages in various Hellenistic authors, e.g., Josephus, Philo, Epictetus, and the Apostolic Fathers. 402. ADVANCED GREEK GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION. (2) Prerequisite: two years of Greek. Characteristics of the Koine; Semitic influences and the individual characteristics of the New Testament writers. Advanced grammar and composition.

The aim and goal of the department of Apologetics is to correlate Christianity with the knowledge attained hy man philosophically and scientifically. Working from an adequate exegetical knowledge of the Scriptures and reasonable familiarity with the present status of philosophy and science, it endeavors to show the harmony of Christianity with the realm of fact and logic. 602. CHRISTIAN EVIDENCES. (2) The basic problem of the relationship of Christian faith to secular, scientific, and philosophic knowledge. Emphasis upon the truthfulness of Christianity on the basis of the supernatural element present in Biblical history, e.g., miracles, prophecy, and the resurrection. 308. CULTS. (2) , A study of modern “ isms” from source material presenting the actual teaching of the founders and leaders of the movements with emphasis upon the corresponding teaching of the Bible. 401. BIBLE AND SCIENCE. (2) The general relationship of scientific knowledge to Biblical faith; and specifically those passages of the Bible that are called in question hy science, e.g., creation, the flood, the ark, the long day of Joshua, Jonah and the whale, and other miracles.
