PHILOSOPHY The purpose of this Department is to acquaint the student with the principal problems and issues of philosophy, historical and contemporary. The effort is made to give a sympathetic insight into the great philosophers and philosophies of the past and present. In specialized courses the problems and issues of philosophies are given an evaluation based upon the particular emphasis of our own school as contained in its charter. 102. INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY. (2) . An introduction to the problems, methods, concepts, and divisions of philosophy, designed to acquaint the student with the philosophic outlook and basic philosophic thought. 201. ETHICS. (3) A study of basic theory in ethics and axiology with a survey of principal ethical theories and thinkers. Correlation with Biblical teaching on ethical matters. 202. LOGIC. (2) Presentation of the nature of logic with various types of logical reasoning: indue- tive, deductive, syllogistic. Elementary introduction to the scientific method. 300a, 300b. DIRECTED RESEARCH. (2-4, 2-4) Guided reading and research in philosophers or philosophical topics. 301,302,303. HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY. (2-3-2) The history of philosophy from Thales to Hegel. A study of the great philosophers and the great systems. 304. PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE. (2) An analysis of the nature of scientific theory, scientific knowledge, and scientific experimentation. Consideration of the limits of science, as well as the relation of science to epistemology and metaphysics. 301 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION. (2) The study of the concepts of religion from the standpoint of philosophy. An investi gation of the leading philosophers of religion, philosophies of religion, and concepts of the philosophy of religion. 307. POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY. (2) An investigation of basic political theory as held by the outstanding thinkers in western history. A study of the relationship of individual to state, as well as contempor ary theories of political philosophy. 309. AESTHETICS. (2) A study of the history of artistic expression and cultural periods in reference to the philosophy of beauty or aesthetics. 401. METAPHYSICS. (2) A study of the basic nature of metaphysical thought. Attention is paid to meta physical categories, metaphysical theories, and great metaphysical thinkers. 402. EPISTEMOLOGY. (2) An investigation into the nature, validity, and scope of human thought and knowl edge. Study of basic theory and outstanding schools of epistemology. 404. TYPES OF APOLOGETIC SYSTEMS. (2) An introduction to the Christian philosophy of religion by studying the great apologetical systems created during the history of the Christian Church.
