COMMUNICATIONS Any performance course in communications (speech) fulfills the general edu cation requirement. This includes 101, 144, 205, 212, 224, and 261. Permission of the instructor is required for any other course to meet the general education requirement.

* A grade of A in either ll0A or ll0B exempts the student from taking the other semester and completes the requirement. LITERATURE 250 Introductory Studies in Literature or 450 Advanced Studies in Literature (with consent of department) or foreign language literature 3 units 8 units This requirement of eight units in a foreign language is based upon the premise that the student plans to continue a high school language in which he has two years of credit (see page 24-High School Record). Those having no foreign language in high school or wishing to begin a new language in college to meet the general education requirement will be required to take twelve units (3 semesters) of a foreign language. Those with three years of the same high school language will need to take only four units (1 semester). Those with four years of the same high school language have met the general education requirement. See the department for details. DIVISION OF SCIENCE
A minimum of eight units is required in science and/ or mathematics. Biology 101 and Physical Science 101 have both been designed for the student with a limited background in science. Those with a strong background may choose other courses with guidance from the division and/or by qualifying through proficiency test ing in biology, chemistry, or mathematics.
