Sports Dome gets fundraising approval

DANIC LEGAULT danic.legault@eap.on.ca

The township of Russell has formally given its approval to the Sports Dome project its approval, during the June 20 Council meeting, for the Kin Club of Russell to start fundraising on. Although it had been approved that the project would not go over the $3million up- set limit, the administration had yet to pres- ent the details of the construction to council, something that was originally planned for April. During the June 20 meeting, a report from CAO Jean Leduc was presented to council in order to invite RFP responses from the two building firms that have been cho- sen, WSP andMcintosh Perry. The approval of the many details for the Sports Dome, however, was said to have been pushed back to October 2016. During question period, Kin Club presi- dent SteveThorne took the stand in order to ask for a fundraising approval, as the OK had not yet been given by Council, something that made it very difficult for the Kin Club to raise money for the project. “We acknowledge the work done by the administration tomove the project forward; however, without an approval by council to build a sports dome, we cannot move forward with fundraising plans, we will lose out on the Canada 150 grants, the Aviva Community Fund Challenge and our time to fundraise, effectively, will be drastically

reduced. It is in the best interest of our citi- zens and our community that the Kin Club of Russell be given an approval to start fun- draising now. »

FollowingMr.Thorne’s demand, Council agreed that the fundraising for the project should not be delayed any longer and gave the Kin Club its blessing to start its fund-

raising campaign. The details of the Sports Dome construction, however, should still be brought before Council in October.
