Prerequisite: 200. 301 MUSIC THEORY-WRITTEN EMPHASIS (2) Chromatic harmony, modulation , and structural aspects of music of the nine teenth century. Sixteenth century counterpoint. Prerequisite: 202. 302 MUSIC THEORY-WRITTEN EMPHASIS (2) Eighteenth century counterpoint. Twentieth century harmony and counterpoint. Prerequisite: 301. 305 MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE (3) The history of music from the pre-Christian era through the early classic period. Prerequisite: 101. 306 MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE (3) The history of music from the late classic period to the present; Prerequisite: 101. 311 , 312 COMPOSITION (2, 2) Original work in vocal and instructional forms. Open to all interested students. · 315 COMPOSING WITH TAPE RECORDERS (1) Stimulation of thought processes to the possibilities of tape composition through the playing of many tape pieces and development of aural discrimination through class critique of tape compositions. (Primarily a laboratory course with the student objective of creating two tape pieces utilizing splicing and mixing techniques. ) Open to all interested students. 3 16 ELEMENTARY MUSIC WORKSHOP (2) Instruction in materials and procedures for teaching music in the elementary school. (Non-music majors-by permission) 3 19 PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC EDUCATION (3) An investigation of philosophies of music education and the resulting aesthetic implications for teaching music in all grades. Instruction in the techniques of correct production and care of the instruments. Method procedures for teaching beginning students. 330 OPERA WORKSHOP (1 -2) The study and performance of chamber operas, one-act operas, and selected Broadway musicals. These works are staged fully in Lansing Hall. Offered fall semester only. Open to all students by audition. 350 A, B ADVANCED KEYBOARD SKILLS CLASS (1) Development of skills for church and classroom. Harmonization, sight reading, transposition, modulation, improvisation, score reading. Prerequisite: 300. 401 ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES (2) Analysis of music: motive, phrase, period; binary, tenary, rondo, and sonata-allegro forms. 402, 403 ORCHESTRATION (2, 2) Range, technique, and transposition of orchestral instruments. Exercises in orchestration. Prerequisite: 302. 411 , 412 COMPOSITION (2, 2) Original work in vocal , instrumental , and orchestral forms. Offered only on a private instructional basis. Prerequisite: 302. 420 SPECIAL STUDIES IN MUSIC LITERATURE (2) An indepth study of music literature as it relates to specific instruments , ensembles, periods of history, geographical location, individual composers or ethnic groups. One or more sections offered every yea_r in areas such as piano literature, choral literature , song literature , organ literature, instrumental literature (strings, woodwinds, brasses, percussion instruments) , American music, the symphony , the string quartet, the concerto, the sonata. 430 PEDAGOGY (2) For the private teacher.
