ETHICS. This course is presented as the philosophy of the conduct of the missionary medic. It includes consideration of the professional nurse and doctor, and the relationship of the non-professional medical worker with the profes­ sional. Credit, one-third hour. MATHEMATICS. A study of simple arithmetic with special emphasis on percentage and fraction problems; a preliminary introduction to drugs and solutions . Credit, one-third hour. MEDICAL ETYMOLOGY. The history and derivation of medical terms for the student of Missionary Medicine, Dentistry, and Dispensary Work. Credit, one-third hour. PHARMACOLOGY I. A study of drugs and solutions. Credit, one hour. HYGIENE. An opportunity is given to find the forces and factors that are involved in maintaining health. It gives the student up-to-date health facts and views, applying them to daily li fe. It includes a study of each system of the body in relation to the best possible hygiene for the maintenance of health. Credit, one hour. ORIENTATION. A synthetic presentation of the whole purpose and plan of the training and courses of study offered in the School of Missionary Medicine. Special emphasis is placed on methods of study, use of the laboratory, use of the library, regulations in the hospital, and the legal aspect of proper missionary medical practice. Credit, one hour . FIRST AID. The standard beginning and intermediate course of First Aid is presented under the regulations of the American Red Cross. A certificate is awarded for the completion of the work. Credit, one hour. NURSING ARTS PROCEDURES I. Lectures and demonstrations on the simple nursing arts procedures. This study is based on the manual of procedures used in the Angelus Hospital, Hollywood Hospital, and Biola Medical Depart­ ment. Credit, one hour. MEDICAL NURSING. A study of the science of disease. This course is de­ voted to special systemic pathology, with special emphasis on the nursing care of medical cases. Credit, one hour. PEDIATRIC NURSING I. A presentation of the physical and emotional growth of the child, with special emphasis on diseases of the newborn. Credit, one hour. COMMUNICABLE DISEASE NURSING. An introduction to preventive medicine with a careful study of techniques and procedures in the care of communicable disease patients. Credit, one hour. OBSTETRICAL NURSING. With the aid of manikins, slides, and moving pictures, a thorough study of the science and art of childbirth is presented. Opportunity is given to attend and observe obstetrical cases under the manage­ ment of the clinic supervisors. Credit, one hour. HOSPITAL WARD NURSING AND CLINICS I. This course is held in the two hospitals and in the Biola Medical Department. Each student is assigned 12 hours of training each week on the hospital wards. Teaching demonstrations are given, as well as practical work opportun ities in medicine, surgery, obstet­ rics, and special clinics. Credit, one hour. ANATOMY. A study of the structure of the human body. This is taught by means of laboratory exercises and lectures. Credit, two hours. PHYSIOLOGY. A study of the function of the human body. Emphasis is la id on the relationship of structure to function . This is taught by means of laboratory exercises and lectures. Credit, three hours. MICROB IOLOGY, A thorough study of the use of the microscope. Credit, one hour. BACTERIOLOGY LECTURE. An introduction to the study of microscopic organisms including bacteria, yeasts, mold, and protozoa. Credit, one hour. 75
