How Did It Go Last Week? Share your successes and trials with the group. (10 minutes) Talk about the high points of your learning from reflecting on the cruciform definition of love. And God Said… Read aloud Galatians 5:13-24 . What is the Point? Read these statements aloud and keep them in mind during the video. (5 minutes) • We harm our marriage and our spouse when we serve the kingdom of self by engaging in “the works of the flesh.” • We prosper our marriage and our spouse when we serve the Kingdom of God by cultivating “the fruit of the Spirit.” Petition Pray this together aloud. D ear Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of Life, sow in our heart the seeds of Christ-likeness, and progress your holy work, that we may now, and more and more, yield God-pleasing character, for the good of our spouse to the glory of God, through Jesus our Savior. Amen. Hear the Word 1. Tripp continues discussing 1 John 4:7-11 . Read the passage aloud, emphasizing v11 . The word ought conveys both a moral imperative—as in “you should [ought to] accept the wisdom of your elders” —and purpose—as in “the emergency brake is intended [ought] to serve as a back-up.” Tripp elaborates the latter meaning in v11 : “We were designed to love…Marriage can’t work without love.” What then is the core characteristic of a marriage that is “working”—an orderly household with well-behaved children? Regular family attendance and participation in church? These all certainly point in the proper direction. But is there something more inward and relational at the heart of a truly good marriage? 2. Read aloud Galatians 5:19-21 , “the works of the flesh.” What is the relationship between such kingdom-of-self behavior and the Kingdom of God? (Hint: see v21 —does this scare you?)
