What Did You Expect Study Guide

Session 9 A Marriage Rooted in Worship

FOR GROUP PARTICIPATION These elements of the study are best used with others in a group setting.

How Did It Go Last Week? Share your successes and trials with the group. (10 minutes) Recite your memory passage, Galatians 5:22-23 —no peeking! Talk about how having the list on your mind prompted and checked you to behave and respond more lovingly to your spouse. And God Said… Read aloud Psalm 139:13-16 . What is the Point? Read these statements aloud and keep them in mind during the video. (5 minutes) • Worship God the Creator who designed your spouse.

• Worship God the Sovereign who ruled over the events that shaped your spouse. • Worship God the Savior who is at work saving and sanctifying your spouse. Petition Pray this together aloud.

O ur Father in Heaven, who sovereignly created all things and pronounced your work “good,” forgive us for assessing our marriage partner by our selfish standards, and for desiring to conform them to our own image; give us to see them as you love them, and to cooperate with your gracious work of transforming them into the image of Jesus, their Savior and ours. Amen. Hear the Word

Watch the video. (18 minutes) Let's Talk About That Discuss these questions. (30 minutes)

1. Read aloud Ps 139:13-16. What adverbs does David use to describe how he was “made” and “woven”? Does this passage also describe how you were created? Does it also describe how your spouse was created? Discuss some specific, practical ways to remind you that your spouse is God’s carefully designed and beloved creation. 2. Think for a moment about your own features and characteristics that you would change if you could. Think also about how you feel knowing that you cannot change such things. Consider whether your spouse also has such features and characteristics and feels the same way. Now read aloud Galatians 5:14 , which we studied in an earlier session. Discuss how this commandment practically applies to you regarding your spouse’s features and characteristics.
